PHYSICS I

Instructor Information:
- I’ll typically be at school from about 7:10 AM until about 4:30 PM, although I will make no absolute guarantees
- I’m more than happy to assist you before or after school. If I’m not meeting with someone else, I’m willing to drop almost anything to help!

Class Topics:
- Science Skills – Nature of science, measurement techniques, data presentation and data analysis
- Physics – Motion, forces, work, power, machines, energy, heat, waves, optics, electricity, and magnetism
- Astronomy – Moon, sun, seasons, solar system, stars, galaxies, and the universe itself
Required Materials:
- Physical Science textbook – Prentice Hall: Physical Science
- Physical Science workbook – Prentice Hall: Reading and Study Workbook
- Pencils, blue/black ink pens, red pens
- Spiral notebook or binder section (for notes)
- Loose leaf paper (for assignments)
- Binder or folder for materials
- Scientific calculator (any you are comfortable using)
Procedures:
Beginning of class:
- Most days, as you enter the classroom, you will be carrying homework assigned the day before
- To avoid a tardy, be sitting at your desk with your homework out before the bell rings
- Stand for prayer, then be seated
- If you are going to be late to class or need to use the restroom, let me know a couple of minutes before the bell rings and you will not be counted tardy (unless this becomes a habit)
During Class:
- Materials must be brought each day; if they are forgotten, you will be issued a demerit
- Some materials can be borrowed from me in exchange for a ransom (i.e. student ID)
- No calculator gaming or cell phone usage is allowed
- Bathroom breaks taken during instruction time must be made up at the end of the day
- Bathroom breaks taken during student time need not be made up (unless they become a habit)
- Only water and gum are allowed for classroom consumption
- When the teacher (or a recognized student) is talking, everyone else must respect that person and not be disruptive
- No one in the classroom has the right to keep the teacher from teaching or the student from learning
End of Class:
- All messes must be picked up or cleaned up before anyone can leave
- Remain in your seat until you are dismissed by the teacher
Assignments:
- All of the assignments for the week will be posted in the classroom on Monday
- For each chapter, you can expect:
- Three or four reading guide worksheets
- One or two math practice worksheets
- An assortment of chapter summary questions assigned with the above worksheets
- Papers with spiral edges will be returned for “de-edgitization”
- All work done in association with this class should be in pencil or it will be penalized
- You will typically grade your own assignment in class. Credit is determined by two factors:
- I will personally grade the one or two problems I deem most important
- You will receive full credit for each of the rest of the problems assuming they were answered completely before grading, graded honestly, and corrected accurately
Late Work:
- Late assignments (any assignment not ready when called for) are immediately docked 50%
- Late work must be turned in before 7:55 AM the next day for credit
- If you miss class for any activity during the school day, you will need to get the assignment beforehand; it is due at the same time as everyone else’s
- Work assigned before an absence is due on the day you return (or on the due date)
- Work assigned during a single day absence is due one day after you return (or on the due date)
- Due dates for extended absences will be worked out between the me, you, and your parents
- In class activities or labs must be made up before or after school within three school days of the missed date
- In class activities or labs due to unexcused absences or suspension may not be made up
Grades:
Grades are calculated on a weighted basis. As such, your final grade will NOT be the number of points you’ve earned divided by the total number of points available for the semester. To understand why you have the grade that you do, you need to look at how you are doing in each category.
- 35% Assignments – Both out of class homework assignments and in class problem solving practice
- 25% Activities – In class lab reports and projects
- 30% Tests – Chapter tests and quizzes
- 10% Final – Cumulative final (taken by all students)
Cheating and plagiarizing are not smart, and will result (at minimum) in no credit for the assignment and a loss of participation points
The grading scale and all other unstated rules and procedures match those stated in the Bishop Carroll agenda book. Accommodations for special needs will be made if reasonable and fair.

Course Objective:
By the end of the year, you will be better at:
- Applying problem solving skills in experimental and theoretical situations (using math skills and science reasoning to do stuff)
- Explaining the many varied interactions of matter and energy in the natural world, including kinetics, dynamics, gravitation, waves, sound, light, and much more (understanding how things work and why they work that way)

- Physics textbook – Merrill Physics: Principles and Problems
- Pencils, blue/black ink pens, red pens
- Spiral notebook or binder section (for notes)
- Loose leaf paper (for assignments)
- Binder or folder for materials
- Scientific calculator (any you are comfortable using)

- Two book assignments to be completed outside of class or in spare class time
- One stapled set of papers including each of the pre-class “focus problems” completed in conjunction with the chapter (due on test day)

- Homework problem format should adhere to guidelines (i.e. knowns/unknowns written, picture drawn, equation written, work shown, etc…)
- Homework should be done in pencil; lab reports must be written in pen or typed

- A portion of the points for each assignment will be related to the honesty of your grading and the accuracy of your corrections
- If the grade you assign yourself differs significantly from the grade I would have assigned you (I will regrade assignments from time to time), you will be required to conference with me

Bridge Competition:
It is a Bishop Carroll Physics tradition to hold a toothpick bridge building competition every year. In this competition, Physics students are required to construct a bridge entirely out of toothpicks and Elmer’s glue. These bridges are then judged on their aesthetic properties and engineering principles before being tested for maximum weight capacity. Toothpick bridges take a LARGE amount of time to construct and will account for your ENTIRE second semester project grade.
Grades:

This syllabus is subject to change during the course of the year for either of two reasons. First, I forget things. Second, things don’t always work out as planned.
