Grading
Semester grades are figured on the basis of total points, the number of which will vary from one grading period to the next. Most tests are worth 100 points. Quizzes and homework are worth a varying number of points depending on the length and difficulty. “Participation” points are awarded on a daily basis for oral or written work done as a class. They cannot be made up in case of absence but will not have a negative effect on the grade if the absence is valid and excused. Please consult our online grade book often to keep track of your progress. An explanation of my method of recording grades on the computer will be given to you during the next few days.
Classroom Policies
- Assignments: Students are responsible for all assigned work including work missed due to absences for any reason. Work not made up within one week* will be recorded as a zero.
- Tests: All tests must be made up within one week* of the original test or the grade will be recorded as a zero. Tests must be made up before or after school rather than during class period. *Extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis for a lengthy illness or family crisis.
- **Students, who fail or do poorly on a test, should see me as soon as possible after the failed test is returned, to inquire about re-testing. Re-testing must be done within one week of the original test.
- It is possible that students with an unexcused absence (including unexcused trips, in-school and out of school suspensions) may not be able to make up missed work.
- Cheating will not be tolerated, including the copying of homework assignments. A grade of zero will be recorded for both parties involved in cheating. Repeat offenses could result in a grade of “F” for the semester.
- This class period should be devoted to the study of French. It is not a study hall. Doing work for other classes will not be allowed except during time designated for study. A “0” in participation for the day will be given for violations of this rule.
- All assignments must be marked with the students’ FIRST and LAST name, the class name and hour, and the page and exercise numbers. Papers without the required identification will not be graded or recorded.
- Bring your book and supplies to class including your student agenda book. You will not be allowed to leave the room for any reason without it.
- Be respectful to all people. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Help create an atmosphere where everyone can be comfortable. Any behavior that could be construed as bullying will be dealt with harshly. This includes recurring insults, putdowns and teasing.
- All rules of Bishop Carroll High School as spelled out in the agenda book will be enforced. including those dealing with the uniform. Be aware of the new rules governing the correct wearing of the uniform which took effect August 2010.
- Water bottles will be permitted in this class. If there are any problems caused by bottles (empty bottles left in the room, distracting noises made with bottles, spills, drinks other than water) this permission will be revoked for the entire class.
- Restroom visits during class are allowed but should be infrequent, and only in case of necessity. If you have a problem that necessitates using the restroom frequently please advise me so that I am aware of your needs. Do not interrupt the class with an announcement of your need to use the restroom.
- Gum is allowed as long as good “gum manners” are observed. This includes chewing quietly, disposing properly of used gum, not blowing bubbles and not passing gum around to others during class. Violations, including gum on the floor and desks, wrappers left in the room etc will result in this privilege being revoked for the entire class.
I will be available to students before and after school. Tests may be made up at this time. It is a good idea to let me know that you are coming in so that I will be in the classroom and not elsewhere in the building. I can be reached evenings at 722-7430 or at vopatbarbara@bcchs.org. Please sign the acknowledgement and return it to the teacher showing that you have read and understand the requirements for this course.
