HTML – CSS – Dreamweaver CS5

Text:  Cengage--Shelly Cashman Series ··Dreamweaver CS5.

Course Purpose: To help students develop skills and knowledge of web site design and development, and to increase the students’ ability to use higher order cognitive skills such as problem solving, synthesis, analysis, and creative thinking.  This course will assist students in finding success in school and in the professional work force.

Attendance: All students are to be in class, seated and ready for work when the bell rings.  Failure to do so is considered being tardy and will result in one demerit (refer to demerit policy in student handbook).  When students are absent, it is their responsibility to check with the teacher and make arrangements to complete the work that was missed.

Assignments:  Assignments are due at a date designated by the instructor. Students will have sufficient time to complete assignments. ASSIGNMENTS MAY NOT BE COMPLETED DURING INSTRUCTION TIME!  I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY UNEXCUSED LATE ASSIGNMENTS!! If student is absent, it is student’s responsibility to find out about missed lessons or assignments. Students must make arrangements about lessons and assignments before they leave on pre-arranged absences.  Assignments missed because of out-of-school or in-school suspension, or unexcused absence will result in 0% credit given on the assignment(s), however, students must still make up the assignment(s).  If students are gone on the day of a test or the day an assignment is due, students will be expected to make up the test or hand in the assignment the first school day student is back, or as scheduled with me.

Creative Duplication: Students are expected to do their own work.  At times, students will work with each other when applicable but are still expected to create their own work. Students caught copying or creatively duplicating will receive a zero on the assignment or test and student’s parents will be notified.  On the second violation, a conference with student’s parents will be required to continue this class.  Any student caught file swapping may lose computer privileges, which may result in a failing grade for the assignment and possibly for the course.

Grading:  Grades are evaluated on a weighted point system. Lab points (20%) are earned on daily attendance, class participation and behavior.  Students will also earn points on assignments (20%), study guides, quizzes, and tests (20%), and a final project for each segment we cover (30%)!  These projects will be due at the END of each SEGMENT on a specific date determined by the teacher.  90% of the semester grade is based on the weighted point system. The semester exam will count as the final 10% of the grade.  Failure to follow rules or not working on assignments during class will result in a loss of lab points.

The following grading scale will be used:
100 – 99   A+                   91 – 90   B+                    82 – 81   C+                  73 – 72   D+             64 and below   F
98 – 94     A                      89 – 85   B                      80 – 76   C                    71 – 67 D
93 – 92     A-                     84 – 83   B-                     75 – 74   C-                   66 – 65   D-

Conduct: Web Design is an upper-level computer class and students are expected to behave accordingly.   There will be NO TOLERANCE for abuse of the equipment.  Disks and computer programs from home will NOT be allowed in the computer labs except by necessity or permission.  IF students DAMAGE ANY EQUIPMENT, students WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS OR REPLACEMENT.  Use of the computer is for educational purposes. All class assignments and projects must be completed before personal use by the student.  NO UNAUTHORIZED DOWNLOADING FROM THE INTERNET WILL BE ALLOWED UNLESS IT IS CLASS RELATED AND OR STUDENT HAS MY PERMISSION.  VISITING BLOCKED SITES BY WAY OF A PROXY IS AGAINST SCHOOL POLICY AND STUDENT WILL LOSE COMPUTER PRIVILEDGES, FACE DETENTION, OR SUSPENSION.

Dress Code: Students are expected to dress according to the dress code policy set forth in the agenda.  Violation will result in disciplinary action as set forth in the agenda book.

No one is allowed to work in a computer lab unless a teacher is present.  In most cases, I or another teacher will be in a computer lab from 7:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. or from 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. or by appointment if a student needs additional help or needs to make up work.  The labs are closed after school on Friday.

DRINKS AND FOOD ARE NOT ALLOWED AT THE COMPUTER STATIONS AT ANYTIME!!!  VIOLATION OF THIS RULE OR ANY RULES STATED IN THIS SYLLABUS WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

The use of cell phones and other electronic devices, as defined in the BCCHS agenda handbook, by students in class is prohibited by school policy AND if used, or in sight will be confiscated and turned in to the office!

BCCHS WEB SITE DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

DISCUSSION AND APPLICATION OF RELATED WEB TOPICS AND PROGRAMS

Course Purpose: To maintain and update the BCCHS web page and to allow the student to practice and develop the skills and knowledge of web design in a professional business environment.  Students will also develop skills in organization, communication, cooperative teamwork, problem solving, creativity, goal setting, time management and task completion.  These skills will help students compete and be successful in an increasingly demanding work force.

Organization: The instructor, with the input of the students, selects a student web master whose responsibilities include the maintenance of the BCCHS home page and overall supervision of the web site.  One to two assistants will also be selected to help out with responsibilities.  All others will be assigned areas of responsibilities as needed.  The student web master and assistants will be selected at the beginning of the semester or previous semester.  The instructor reserves the right to remove and replace the web master and/or the assistants if responsibilities are not being diligently executed.

Attendance: All students are to be in class, seated and ready for work when the bell rings.  Failure to do so is considered being tardy and will result in one demerit and loss of daily lab points (refer to demerit policy in student handbook).  When students are absent, it is their responsibility to check with the teacher and make arrangements to complete the work that was missed.  This class requires dedicated attendance much like the workforce in today’s society if we are to produce and effectively maintain a professional Web site.

Assignments: Students will be assigned certain areas of responsibilities. Grades (pay day), will be determined by the instructor on how well responsibilities are carried out and completed.  Some assignments may require work outside of class time.  Evaluation by the instructor will occur every week based on a point scale and scoring rubric.  Each student fills out a weekly production sheet explaining the tasks and duties performed.  The Student Web Master will review the production sheet for any discrepancies and then hand it in to the instructor. Students will be evaluated on teamwork, production, task completion, time management, attitude, creativity, industriousness, attendance, cooperativeness, and group discussion and participation.

Grading:  Grades are evaluated on a weekly point system (points daily) for each area of responsibility. In addition, lab points are earned daily based on attendance, participation and behavior.  90% of the semester grade is based on the point system. The semester evaluation will count as 10% of the semester grade. Failure to follow rules, class procedures, and requirements will result in a loss of daily lab points, or removal from class.

Conduct: Web Applications is an upper-level computer production class and I expect team members to behave accordingly. This course is by teacher approval.  I want the team member to enjoy what they are doing and to be creative, but, because we design and maintain the BCCHS web site which is in full view of the general public, this course demands a serious student who will carryout his/her duties and responsibilities with due diligence to produce the best product possible.  If a student demonstrates a refusal to follow the rules of this class or discharges their duties with irresponsibility or lack of enthusiasm, a conference with the parents will be setup to discuss the situation, or the student will be withdrawn from the class.

Dress Code: Students are expected to dress according to the dress code policy set forth in the agenda.  Violation will result in disciplinary action as set forth in the agenda book.

DRINKS AND FOOD ARE NOT ALLOWED AT THE COMPUTER STATIONS AT ANYTIME!!!  VIOLATION OF THIS RULE OR ANY RULES STATED IN THIS SYLLABUS WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

Use of the computer is for educational purposes. All web team assignments and projects must be completed before personal use of the computer by the student.  NO UNAUTHORIZED DOWNLOADING FROM THE INTERNET WILL BE ALLOWED UNLESS IT IS CLASS RELATED AND OR STUDENT HAS MY PERMISSION.  VISITING BLOCKED SITES BY WAY OF A PROXY IS AGAINST SCHOOL POLICY AND STUDENT COULD  LOSE COMPUTER PRIVILEDGES, FACE DETENTION, OR SUSPENSION.

The use of cell phones and other electronic devices, as defined in the BCCHS agenda handbook, by students in class is prohibited by school policy AND if used, or in sight will be confiscated and turned in to the office!

ALL WORK CREATED FOR THE BCCHS WEB SITE BECOMES THE PROPERTY OF BISHOP CARROLL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
