LIBRARY SCIENCE SYLLABUS (#480)
INSTRUCTOR: Peggy Ochs

GRADE LEVEL: Junior/Senior
CREDIT: 1/2 credit/semester
CLASS LIMIT: 1-2 students per period
PREREQUISITE: Instructor Approval
DESCRIPTION: Students assist the librarian in providing library service to students and staff members. They will help maintain and care for the library collection. They will learn to use and classify both print and non-print materials and equipment; improve their knowledge of library facilities for present and future use; and acquire skill in finding information for themselves and others, for both academic and personal use.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED:
- Serving the patrons of the library.
- Arrangement of the library -- Dewey Decimal system, floor plan.
- Circulation procedures -- books, magazines, AV & software and hardware.
- Location and use of fiction and non-fiction materials.
- Use of OPAC, databases, and Internet on Computer.
- Maintenance, accountability and use of AV and computer equipment.
7. Promoting the Library and reading for pleasure.

HOW YOU WILL BE GRADED:
1. DAILY WORK: 5 points may be earned for each day’s work. These points are earned on
the basis of initiative, attitude, accuracy, helpfulness and responsibility. This
includes use of time. Ex. Reading not talking
2. EXAMS & QUIZZES: There will be tests, and a semester exam.
Quizzes and exams may be paper or show me.
3. DEMERITS: Demerits will be given for the reasons outlined in the Agenda Book, including
tardies.
