Catholic Social Teaching: By Michael Pennock

Materials Needed:  Notebook

                               Blue or Black Ink pen
Students will be expected to come to class with all materials and books each day.

Course Description:  This course will examine the climate of today’s current culture and how we as Catholics are called to evangelize and transform the culture.  This will be done by studying the proper value and dignity of the human person and how we are called to relate to one another as set forth through the Church’s principles on Social Justice.

Course Goal: By the time this course is over you should be able to understand the Church’s teaching on various social issues and be empowered to put them into practice by becoming involved in your Parish, School, Families, and Communities.

Procedures and Policies:

  • All Classes will begin with a Prayer.  All students are expected to be reverent and respectful during prayer.  Talking or being disrespectful during prayer will constitute a no questions asked demerit.
  • Students are expected to be on time. Tardiness will not be tolerated.  If you are tardy you will receive a demerit.
  • Students are expected to be in class in order to receive participation points. Attendance is very important.  Any unexcused absence will result in a zero for any work missed that day.  Suspensions and In School Suspensions will be handled the same way as an unexcused absence.
  • All work needs to be completed on time.  Late work will not be accepted and will receive a 0.  If you need an extension on something you will need to talk to me privately before it is due and I alone reserve the right to grant or deny the extension.
  • All work needs to be turned into the correct bin for your hour at the beginning of class.
  • Cheating will not be tolerated.  Anyone caught cheating will immediately receive a zero on that test or assignment, parent will be contact and student will receive a detention.
  • All rules on the back of your demerit card will be strictly enforced.  If I ask for you demerit card and you argue with me you will automatically receive another demerit.  Individual class disruptions will receive demerits.  If the class is being disruptive as a whole I will stop class and you will all receive an additional assignment.
  • The main thing I expect is respect.  As long as we respect each other and the rules we will have a great semester together. Let us remember that we are in a Catholic School and that we are all created in the Image and Likeness of God.  Let us try and pray to see Christ in everyone.  Anything that goes against this will not be tolerated.

Grades and Assignments
I will grade based on total points.  You will be evaluated in the following ways:

  • Homework Assignments
  • Quizzes and Tests
  • Projects
  • Socratic Seminars
  • Weekly Participation

This will make up 90% of your Semester Grade with the other 10% being decided by your final exam.

Quizzes:
You will have at least one quiz a week.  Some will be announced some will be pop quizzes.

Tests
Tests will be given at the end of each major section. They will be a combination of objective and subjective questions.

Stewardship Hours:
The 20 stewardship hours required for junior year are associated with this class.  They are due Monday, December 13th.  Failure to do these will result in a failing grade for this class.

Extra Credit:  There will probably be little to no opportunities for Extra Credit.  If I happen to give one and you are worried about your grade I suggest you do it because I probably won’t allow you to do anything else.

*The instructor has the right to make changes to this syllabus at any point during the year.

Good luck and God Bless!
