Although points at the beginning of the semester are worth as much as points at the end, grades are broken into 3 weighted
categories to equal 100% throughout each semester quarter:
50% tests/quizzes 40% homework, lab work, projects 10% class participation
Semester grades will be based on: 90% based on Semester work
10% Cumulative Semester Final
Remember that grading scales with weighted categories will compute differently than a total point grading scale.
Extra Credit: This will happen about as frequently as Halley Comet's appearance to Earth. I also do not create extra credit
projects for individual students.
Good Rule of Thumb to follow - Complete and turn in all the work assigned and extra credit won't be needed.
Classroom Rules:
- Be respectful of other students, teachers & property.
- Come with a positive: “can do” attitude.
- Wait to speak until recognized; Listen without interrupting others.
- Show respect for people and their opinions, even though you may or may not agree or understand.
- Extend this courtesy to demonstrations or lab materials that are set up for other classes.
- Do not write or mark on the desks/tables; otherwise you will not only receive a demerit but also have cleanup detention after school.
- No food, beverage (other than water in a clear bottle) or gum as on some days, they double as desks and lab area.
If the water bottle creates a distraction, it will be taken away. Keep your areas clean in consideration of the next person sitting
in your area or you will receive a loss of points.
- Be punctual and prepared to participate.
- Bring completed homework and required material to be turned in upon request in the classroom, unless directed
otherwise.
- Do NOT bring backpacks to the classroom.
- Trips back to your lockers will require the use of your “Hall Pass” or a demerit for not having come prepared
- Anticipate and plan accordingly prior to the ringing of the passing period bell.
- Stay in your seats or at your assigned table.
- Sharpen pencils before class.
- Keep what needs to be thrown away until you leave, then deposit in the trash on your way out the door.
- Having to wander during the class is distracting to the presenter and classmates.
- If not in your assigned seat before the bell rings, then an unexcused tardy and receipt of a demerit will result.
- Walking in the door as the bell rings does not excuse this tardy.
- Ask for the previous hour's classroom teacher signature in your agenda or have them e-mail excusing your tardy if you were finishing a test or helping to "clean-up" resulting in your being delayed.
- If you have locker problems, let the office know and request a signature in your agenda. You will
receive a demerit if this is not brought with you.
- Mass time may be used as a study hall, no visitors, no games, only silent studying.
- You will not be allowed to leave the classroom during the Mass time, unless you are going to Mass.
- Anticipate what will be needed as materials desired for study hall need to be with student prior to release for Mass.
- If another teacher needs to see during the study hall; please get your agenda signed in advance or better yet, have
that teacher e-mail me expressly requesting that you be permitted to report to them during the passing period of
the study hall.
- Be focused on the task at hand. You may request to work for another class only if work for Chemisty I is completed
and you request permission.
- Follow all handbook rules.
- Cell phones or any other inappropriate electronic device are not allowed in the classroom during school hours.
You will leave me no other choice but to confiscate any electronic device and turn it in to the office to be picked
up in the office after you serve a detention. This is not open for negotiation and any argumentation will result in
not only a detention but also a demerit for arguing the abuse of this policy.
Hall passes will be allowed on an emergency basis only.
- Intended use is on a basis of needing to make a trip to the restroom, water fountain, locker or to make a phone call in the office in an effort to avoid receiving a demerit for being tardy or coming unprepared.
- Each student will be allowed a maximum of 5 hall passes per semester.
- Students who have used up their 5 hall passes will have to plan to use their passing periods to take care of personal needs or risk taking a demerit.
- A student’s request to use the pass may be delayed until it is appropriate to miss out on the activity in the
class.
- Hall passes are not transferrable. Each student must present his/her own hall pass given during the
semester for appropriate accountability.
- It is your responsibility to have your hall pass with you throughout the semester, failure to have it with you in the event you need to leave the room will have to result in a demerit for not coming prepared.
- 2 points credit will be allotted for each unused hall pass at the end of the semester prior to taking the
final.
- Last chance for a student to bring the hall pass is before the final, after the final will result in forfeiture of the 2 points credit per unused pass.
- Once the hall pass is used up or misplaced, it may not be replaced.
Homework: is due on the assigned date, typically the beginning of the next class period, unless noted otherwise. Students with
advance notice of more than one day of a homework assignment due (who have and excused absence) in between the time of assignment
and the due date will need to have the assignment ready on the day of their return. Students will always have homework, in the form of
reviewing the text, vocabulary and notes taken in class and can be prepared for potential quizzes.
Headings If not directed to record your assignment in your composition books, headings on papers are to be in
the upper right corner of paper,
Name (first & last name printed)
Class/Hour
Assignment title (such as “Questions, pg. 25”)
Date
If an assignment is directed to be recorded in your composition book in the left hand margin, then you are to record:
Date,
page # and assignment title (to include Section #)
Late Work: Late work is NOT accepted!! If an assigned due date is given at the time of an assignment, then homework is
due at the beginning of the hour. NO EXCEPTIONS. This includes the computer/printer conflicts that may happen on the
home front. The library is available before school to print out work. Please get your work in on time!! Late work is NOT
accepted!! Homework is due at the beginning of the hour. NO EXCEPTIONS. Please get your work in on time!!
*Assignments that require the use of Internet Research or Word Processor/Presentation Software/Printer Usage will have had class time incorporating the use of school facilities. If students use the time allowed in class as intended and plan personal time accordingly for any extended work, there should be no conflict of meeting timelines established in class, unless there has been an excused absence that warrants extensions of timelines and communication of this need with me has been established. Work with previously established timelines will be due upon the return of the student.
Make-Up Work: Only if an absence is excused will make-up work be accepted for full credit.
- In accordance with the student handbook, if an absence is anticipated, the student needs to notify the office
and myself. It is the student's responsibility to request any handouts and make-up assignments.
- Make-up work assigned during your excused absence is to be completed within two days of returning to class.
- If notes were taken, it is the student's responsibility to check with a classmate within the same class to complete their
notes. I recommend that you exchange phone numbers or e-mail addresses with a “study buddy” within the same
class.
- If an assignment/project is due or a test is scheduled on the day of the excused absence, the assignment or project will
be due upon your return to school. If you return to school on the day the assignment is due outside of our designated
class time, have it placed in my box when you check in at the office or at least check in with me to arrange time for
make-up of the activity, lab or test.
- Make-up of missed labs for excused absences are to be made up by pre-arranged appointment either before school or
between 3:15 - 4:30 PM by the Thursday afternoon (within a week) following the excused absence(s) I sympathize
with potential conflicts and will write a pass for any missed practice in an effort to help you stay grade-eligible for
competition. It is your responsibility to communicate your intentions for us to coordinate the best time possible for
this make-up within a week of the missed activity. This is a must for your success.
Quizzes: won't always be announced and the topic will usually be on the most recent information reviewed. It is to your advantage to review vocabulary/notes before class. Quizzes will always address either vocabulary or material introduced in
class.
Tests: will be announced in advance. Tests will be reviewed in class but kept by Mrs. Crownover. Students wishing to review
the test are welcome to come in for additional review and clarification of understanding.
Cheating: A zero will be given and a discipline referral will be made. Save yourself the grief of a bad reputation and do your
own work!
ISS or OSS: Knowledge of work conducted in class will still be needed for success in the chapter tests and subsequent
Semester Final. Students are still accountable for the work addressed during this absence. Pursuant to the Student Handbook
(Pg. 21) Students in ISS will be allowed to turn in completed work for 50% credit after the work has been graded. Students
asked to leave my classroom due to uncooperative or disruptive choices or for serving an OSS will not be allowed to
make up the work missed during the time out of class. Students who turn in work assigned prior to the assignment
of the OSS directly to me or through an administrator by the deadline, will be able to receive 50% credit. This
includes homework, lab work, and tests.
