Algebra 1A Syllabus
Welcome to Algebra 1A
Course Syllabus, 2011 – 2012

My planning period is 2nd hour. I will be available before (except for monthly faculty and department meetings) and after school in Room 402 for students needing assistance.
Text: Algebra 1 Structure and Method Book 1 (Houghton Mifflen)
Course Description: This course will build a foundation of basic skills and properties of Algebra 1 and develop problem solving skills and logical thinking.
Required Materials: Textbook
Pencil
Red pen
Notebook paper
Plain Pocket Folder
No calculator will be used the first two chapters. Usage for other chapters will be announced.
Grading Scale: The diocesan grading scale listed in your handbook will be followed.
Grades:
Semester grade = 10% Participation + 50% Tests and Quizzes + 30% Homework + 10% Semester Test
Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and must be completed in PENCIL. Due dates will be clearly announced. It is your responsibility to make up assignments due to absences.
- Make-up work will be accepted for full credit for excused absences. Make-up work for unexcused absences will be accepted for 50% credit. One day per absences plus one additional day will be allowed to turn in this work.
- In-school suspension work will result in 50% credit. Out-of-school suspension work will result in 10% credit. This work is due the day you return to class.
- For assignments missed due to school-related activities, arrangements must be made with instructor beforehand.
- For extended absences, please make arrangements with the instructor.
- ONE LATE paper per nine weeks is accepted for full credit. This one is due the day of the chapter test. No other late papers will be accepted.
Tests: If you miss class the day before a chapter test, you will be required to take the chapter test on schedule. If you miss the chapter test, you will be required to take the test before or after school within one week.
- There will be no retakes on chapter tests or quizzes.
- Several quizzes will be given during the chapters and are test/quiz points.
- Daily notes kept in a plain pocket folder and turned in at the end of the nine weeks can earn extra credit on your test percent.
Participation: Participation points will be given daily for being involved in class activities. This includes following class expectations and teacher’s directions. Non-participation behavior includes sleeping, talking out of turn, writing notes, copying answers during grading process, working on other classes, or any other misbehavior
Tardy Policy: If you are late to class, you will receive a demerit. You must be in the room and directly on your way to your assigned seat as the bell rings to be on time.
Classroom Expectations:
- Practice common courtesy and respect
- No food or drink, except water, is allowed in the classroom
- Gum is acceptable provided it is not seen or heard
- No cell phones or electronic devices
- Assignments and tests in pencil only
- Have supplies each day and be prepared to learn
- Teacher dismissal
- Rules and regulations in agenda will be enforced
- Passes – two passes per nine weeks. These may only be used during non – instructional time and must be in your agenda book
Cheating: Cheating is defined as giving or receiving unauthorized aid on homework assignments, quizzes, or tests. If you are participating in such behavior, you will receive a ZERO on that particular item. You are NOT ALLOWED TO COMMUNICATE IN ANY FORM WITH OTHERS DURING A QUIZ OR TEST.

Course Description: This course is a study of basic principles of Euclidean Geometry. Plane and solid geometry will be explored.
