Procedures:

The St. Gianna Catholic Health Academy has expectations that students will be self- motivated, progressive, and contribute toward creating a learning atmosphere that enables all students and teachers to perform at their highest level.

Attendance:

Regular, timely attendance is essential to students individual and team performance.

All tardiness, absences and reasons for those will be recorded.

Tardiness and absences are part of the students’ grade due to the nature of the program.

1. Points will be given for participation.

2. Student’s final grade will be lowered one letter grade if he or she has 3 - 5 unexcused absences or tardiness.

3. Student’s final grade will be lowered two letter grades if he or she has 6 – 9 unexcused absences or tardiness.

Only excused absences are as follows:

3. Funeral – note from funeral director required

4. School Event – note from coach or instructor required

A phone call by 10:00 AM is required to the teacher, Mrs. Clarke, on the day the student will miss. The call may be made by either the student or parent if a student will not be attending the Health Academy.

The doctors, coach, instructor, or funeral director note will need to be brought on the school day following the student’s absence.

If the notice of an absence is given after 10:00 AM of the day that is to be missed, then it will not be considered an excused absence.

Either the student or the teacher will follow through with a phone call to the professional the student has been assigned to observe prior to the event the day of the absence.

Make-up Work:

Make- up work time allotment will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Factors such as student's general time management and attendance play an important role in determining amount of time permitted for make-up assignments.

Missed assignments from missed days must be completed. Each student will be given one day per missed day to make up missed work.

It is the student’s responsibility to make up work for all projects, grades, and days missed. Meet with the instructor immediately.

There will be no make-up work after the semester has ended.

No late assignments will be accepted.

Clothing:

Lab Coats are required to be worn at all times.

Appearance is important due to the nature and location of the Academy.

Dress code expectations from the home school will be followed.

Free Dress days - NO JEANS in the medical center. On free dress days students must wear slacks, skirts, or dresses to shadow!

Students will have identification badges and are expected to wear them whenever on campus or observing a professional off-site.

Students will be evaluated on their dress and appearance as part of their grade.

Internet / Computers:

Computers and Internet will be available to help meet the goals of the academy by engaging in research culminating in completion of assignments.

Behavior reflecting Catholic decency and morality is expected at all times.

Students are expected to use the computers for educational purposes only.

Instant messenger will not be allowed in the classroom.

Students will be evaluated on their ability to stay on task will using the computers.

Parking:

Students will park as directed by the Via Christi Regional Medical Center Security direct during orientation week.

Tickets will be issued for illegal parking.

Grading Scale:

The instructor will adopt the grading scale from the student’s home school.

College courses will be evaluated and recorded by Newman University according to Newman University Instructors’ Syllabus.

Evaluation:

1. Students will be evaluated in numerous ways.

Professionals and Instructor will evaluate student conduct while observing and in the classroom.

Instructor and professionals will evaluate research projects

Teacher at Health Academy and NU will evaluate progress in medical terminology

Instructor and professionals will evaluate presentations.

The instructor and professionals will evaluate progress in Anatomy.

The instructor and professionals will evaluate the student’s portfolio.

Disposition (includes, but not limited to attendance, tardiness, dress and appearance, cooperation, and ability to remain task oriented in class or on rotation.

Lab assignments will include but not limited to learning medical equipment (stethoscope, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, and reflex hammer), practicing skills learned, and putting skills to use in the community.

1. A midterm and final will be given to evaluate student’s progress.

2. Both an oral and written exam will be used in the evaluations.

Medical Terminology and Anatomy Exams

3. College credit portion will be due as stated in NU instructor’s syllabus

4. Health Academy Instructor will also be evaluating student’s progress throughout the semester using pop quizzes.

5. A midterm and final will be given to evaluate student’s progress.

Dr. Singh at NU will explain Career Options course expectations.

The instructor may record project grades anytime during semester. This program is individualized for each student and the student is responsible for keeping tack of his or her own progress. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure he or she is on task and has turned in work.

No late assignments will be accepted.

All grades are final after the semester has ended.
