Course Description:
Speech is a communications course involving organizational skills in research, verbal proficiency, methods of presentation, and delivery. A wide range of speaking assignments aids in the student achieving poise, confidence and structure in public speaking situations.
Classroom Conduct and Expectations:
The student will maintain a level of respect in the classroom, following the Golden Rule, to love God above all and your neighbor as yourself. This respect will be not only for the teacher and fellow students, but also respect for Christ, the Church and its teachings. This classroom should be a community of Christ, where everyone feels welcome to share ideas and opinions. Classroom disruption will not be tolerated. Please, however, feel free to ask questions and comment during class.
1. Be in your assigned seat and quiet when the bell rings. The bell is your signal to be writing your journal topic, not discussing with classmates.
2. Bring current book, English Binder, Journal and materials to class daily
3. Keep your hands, feet and other objects to yourself
4. Use appropriate and positive language
5. Keep all candy and drinks (excluding water) out of the classroom. Please be respectful while chewing gum and drinking water. If proper disposal becomes an issue ALL classes will lose privileges.
6. Do not talk while I am talking
Failure to follow above rules will result in a demerit or other punishment based on teacher discretion.

Powerschool is your friend!:
We have been given the gift of technology. Your grades will be available for both you and your parents to check at any time. I will update quizzes and daily grades as they come in – usually every day. On papers or projects, my goal is to get grades in within a week of you turning in assignments. Please use Powerschool to check your grades as well as to make sure I haven’t made a mistake. Although English teachers like to think they are perfect, I’m still human.
Homework/Assignments:
Homework assignments will be completed before the beginning of class or they will be counted late. All other homework assignments and projects will be turned in on their due date, if not before.
Late Homework: You may turn in late work for half credit for up to three days, after which you will not receive credit.
Late Speeches: Formal speeches will be considered late if they are not given when they are due.
- Later that day, 1 letter grade.
- Each day after, 1 letter grade for each day.
- Day 5 - no credit, entered in the grade book as NHI (not handed in) with a value of zero.
Absences:
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get assignments and schedule make-up tests before or after class. Do not disrupt the rest of the class to ask about assignments when you were gone.
Any handouts passed out while you were absent will be in the box in the back of the room. It is your responsibility to take a look and get what you need.
Unless the assignment was given a specific due date, you have three days for each day that you were absent to make up the work. You have only 3 days to make up a test or speech missed due to an absence. Again, it is your responsibility to schedule a makeups within these three days. If you know you are going to be gone, please plan ahead and get your assignments before you leave. With a planned absence before a speech, you also need to plan a time before you leave to deliver your speech to the class.

Course Description:
English I exposes students to a variety of significant multicultural literature to enhance their reading skills and understanding of a diverse world. Students will engage in writing projects, which reinforce and synthesize critical thinking, vocabulary, and grammatical skills.

Journal – 1 Composition Book. Your journal will be turned in so, be honest but do not write what you do not want me to see. Journal entries should be a full 10 lines long – no matter what type of notebook you use! You will only receive half credit for nine lines or less. The back of your journal will be used for class themes as well as note taking.
Grammar Test Policy:
Students will take a grammar test once a semester. This is a pass/fail test. Failure to pass these tests at a mastery level will require completing remediation lessons online and retaking the exam outside of class time by a specific date. Teachers will be available for help after school but lessons may be completed at home. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for the Grammar Test.

The student will read Night, The Interactive Reader and Writer, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet,. The student will read poetry, drama, short stories, and non-fiction as well as working on composition, grammar, vocabulary and writing.
Exams:
Exams will include a main essay on a given question about the unit of study. There may also be matching, short answer, true and false, and/or multiple-choice questions. More about each exam will be discussed before each test.

Leaving the Classroom: The student will receive an extra credit pass at the beginning of each semester. Each time they leave the room for personal reasons their card will be punched. After the fifth punch, the student will receive a demerit for each time they leave the room. Any extra punches will be counted as extra credit at the end of the semester. If the student loses a pass, another will not be issued. Extra credit will only go to the student whose signature is on the pass.
I am available before and after school as well as in between classes to answer any questions.

Course Description:
This course is designed to expose students to various styles of world literature. It will also further develop and improve writing, grammar and vocabulary skills.
Course Objectives: After this course, the student will:
1. Interpret and analyze literature by demonstrating an understanding of the basic themes of the literary works covered. This will be done through projects and activities as well as discussions over readings.
2. Be prepared to defend him/herself when asked how this course relates to his/her everyday life.
3. Be able to express him/herself using correct grammar, vocabulary and usage of the English language, with a special concentration on the five-paragraph essay.

State Reading Assessment:
Students will be taking the State Reading Assessment during the spring semester. As per diocesan policy, if a student doesn’t meet standard on a state assessment, the school shall require successful remediation before issuing a diploma or transcripts. Please see the agenda for more information.
