Text:  Advancing in Debate: Skills & Concepts  & Student Handbook
Goal:  Students will learn and apply rules of public speaking and parliamentary procedures.
General Objectives of the course:

  1. Students will examine and apply advanced rules of rhetoric.
  2. Students will do in-depth research applications for bills and resolutions presented in the Student Congress format.

3.  Students will study advance debate theory and logic as it relates to the current issue and present their analysis through oral communication.

  1. Students will write and formulate Legislation (bills and resolutions) for

     competitive presentation.
5.  Students will create and maintain a complete Affirmative and Negative Briefs on each piece of legislation presented at Student Congress.
Requirements:
1. Students are required to compete in a minimum of 5 tournaments as part of the academic requirement of the class.

  1. Students are required to work at the BCCHS invitational student congress.
  2. Missing class can cause the student to get behind.  It will be the student’s responsibility to get notes and materials from another student or the teacher.
  3. Missing a tournament without prior approval will result in grade loss.
  4. Miss use of the school’s computers will result in grade loss and other appropriate disciplinary actions.

Grading:  Students will be graded on the following:  Tournament participation is REQUIRED  to pass the class.  Diocesan grade scale used to calculated grades.
1.  Weekly tests and quizzes over the book and material discussed in class. and competition.

  Introduction to Drama

 

Text:  Basic Drama Projects
GOAL:  The goal of this course is to enhance the student’s general knowledge of theatre and its influence on society and culture.  This is a survey course that includes many facets of theatre including theatre history, stage techniques, costuming, etc.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

  1. Students will study and learn theatre history and the influence of culture

      and society as reflected in theatre throughout history.

  1. Students will do some performing in class from selected scripts and plays

     for the express purpose of applying learned techniques and procedures.

  1. Students will learn group mechanics through a diversity of projects

     designed to teach teamwork in a production.

  1. Students will read a variety of plays designed to acquaint the student

     with great playwrights and their contribution to the stage.

GRADING: 

  1. Students will be given tests and quizzes over material covered in the text and over plays read and studied in class. 
  2. Various assignments over material such as oral presentations, study questions, vocabulary quizzes, work sheets etc. will also constitute the student’s grade.
  3. Students are responsible for any work missed during an abxence.
  4. Diocesan grading scale used to calculate grades.

Acting I, II, III, IV

 

Course title:  Acting I, II, III, IV                          Instructor:  Brenda Boudreau

TEXT: Drama for Reading & Performance( Book 1 & Book 2

GOAL:  The goal of this course is to refine student skills and acting techniques by enhancing their knowledge of theatre, acting, stage skills, methods and techniques       of play production through various activities and performances.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

  1. Students will refine stage skills and techniques of acting, make-up and

     costuming for performance.

  1. Students will work daily on theatre related projects, which will

     emphasize the development of vocal and physical presentations.

  1. Students are expected to perform in the Children’s play, Fall Play and any

     other play produced by the class.

  1. Acting students are expected to audition for all BC productions or

Participate in each production in some capacity.  (i.e. crew, stage manager, lights etc.)

  1. Students will cultivate group activities sharing production

     responsibilities.
6.  Students will polish memorization techniques.
GRADING:
1.  Daily grades will be given based upon participation.
2.  Students enrolled in ACTING are required to participate in every class                 production in order to receive a passing grade.
3.  Students are expected to be self-motivated with performance as a goal.
4.  Additional grades will be given for miscellaneous activities including but
not limited to: class tests and quizzes, attendance at a live performances,
special projects approved by the instructor, scene memorization and
performance.

GOAL:  Students will learn and apply speaking and acting skills in competition.
General Objectives of the course:

  1. Students will examine and apply the objectives of public speaking and declamation.
  2. Students will do in-depth research as it applies to their preparation or speaking or acting.
  3. Students will rehearse and apply the theories of good communication and the skill of acting as it relates to competition.
  4. Students will write and formulate speeches.
  5. Students will create and maintain a complete forensic file of events for competition.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Students are required to compete in a minimum of 4 tournaments as part of the academic requirement of the class.  (This does not insure any particular grade.)
  2. Students are required to work at the BCCHS invitational forensic tournament and supply the tournament with 2 judges for the tournament.
  3. Students will be expected to exhibit good manners and good behavior at all times.

All handbook policies will apply.
GRADING:  Students will be graded on the following:
Tournament participation is required to pass the class.

  1. Rehearsals and participation in class discussions and competition are required for grading purposes.
  2. Oral presentations critiqued by the instructor are expected on a weekly basis.

Goal:  Students will learn the theory of debate and the rules and regulations of competitive debate in Kansas high schools.
General Objectives of the course:

  1. Students will examine and apply the theory of debate .        
  2. Students will learn to research and apply information to both sides of the issue.

3.  Students will learn to analyze the issue thoroughly and present their   analysis through oral communication.
4.  Students will learn the rules of competitive debate.

Requirements:
1. Students are required to compete in a minimum of 5 tournaments as part of the academic requirement of the class. (5 tournaments does not equal an A.
2.  Students are required to work at the BCCHS invitational debate  tournament and supply the tournament with 2 judges for the tournament.
3.  Additional criteria for the class is outline in the BCHS Debate Handbook

Prerequisite:  Computer Applications or Investigations in Technology I

REQUIRED:  All students must be available to video tape assignments outside of the classroom time. (ie. Ball games, performances, concerts, meets, etc.)

Course description:
Broadcasting I is an overview of video production which is designed to acquaint students with the basic equipment knowledge for filming and editing video.  Students will be involved in filming and editing various school and diocesan events for production.

Course content:

  1. Equipment usage and care
  2. Editing
  3. Filming

Grading:
1.  Weekly tests and quizzes over the book and material discussed in class.

Anyone caught abusing the equipment will have to pay for damages and face disciplinary  measures that could include dismissal from the class and grade loss as well as administrative disciplinary actions.

Technical Theatre
            Instructor:  Brenda Boudreau

GOAL:  The goal of this course is to acquaint the students with the technical aspects of theatre arts including set design, set building, lighting, sound, props and
costumes.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
1.  Students will learn basic concepts of set design.
2.  Students will learn to build set from specification requirements.
3.  Students will learn lighting and sound management.
4.  Students will learn to safely operate electric tools and equipment.
5.  Students will learn to “crew” shows.
GENERAL CLASSROOM POLICIES:
1.  No gum chewing.
2.  Be on time to class.
3.  Safety first! 

  1. Students must conduct themselves carefully and cautiously.  Power tools

     can be dangerous.
5.  Any student caught clowning around, running or behaving in a dangerous
manner will be subjected to various disciplinary measures including
dismissal from the class.
6.  Students must wear safety goggles while working with power tools.
7.  Students can bring a change of clothes for painting and working.

  1. Each class period will end with all tools being neatly stored and the work areas swept.

          9.  Each student will be expected to work on productions.
GRADES:

  1. Grading is done on the basis of  participation, attendance  and work completed.
  2. Working lights, sets or stage management during a production is recommended.
  3. Failure to follow class procedures and safety rules will result in loss of

     grade.
