“We can do no great things; only little things with great love.” – Blessed Mother Teresa

Course Objective
The primary purpose of this course is to build a foundation of basic skills and properties of Algebra I and develop problem solving skills and logical thinking.

Course Materials
You will need the following everyday: textbook, pencil, red pen, notebook paper, and a folder/3-ring binder.

Course Grades
During each semester, points will be earned in the following categories:

  • Chapter Quizzes and Exams (63%)
    • There will be at least one quiz/test every week.
    • Quizzes may be announced or unannounced and are usually worth 5 – 15 points.
    • All quizzes and tests will be cumulative.  Tests will be announced and reviewed for during class.
  • Homework (27%)
  • Homework will be assigned daily and must be completed in pencil!  Each assignment will be worth 5 points based on completion and/or correctness.  Each assignment will be due at the start of class the following day with all work shown (NO WORK = NO CREDIT).  Assignments should be folded lengthwise with your name and assignment appearing in the upper right hand corner.  Multiple pages should be stapled or folded together so they will not be misplaced.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!

Course grades will be assigned according to the diocesan grading scale.

I will update grades weekly.  You will be able to view your grade through your middle school powerschool account.

Classroom Procedures
Be Prompt.  I will begin each class with grading homework from the previous day.  I know it is early, but please be in your seat ready to go at 7am!

Be Prepared:  Everyday you will need your book, a pencil, a red pen, and notebook paper.

Be Respectful.  You should be quiet and respectful while I am teaching or answering questions of others.  You may not leave your desk during instruction time.  If you have a question or would like to answer a question, you must raise your hand and wait to be called upon.  Please remember that you are in a shared learning environment and your actions affect those around you.  I will dismiss you at the end of class after all trash has been thrown away and desks returned to their places.

Cheating.  Cheating is defined as giving or receiving unauthorized aid on assignments, quizzes, or tests.  If you are caught participating in such behavior, you will receive a ZERO on that particular item.  YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO COMMUNICATE IN ANY FORM WITH OTHERS DURING A QUIZ OR TEST!!!

Absences.  If you are absent, you are responsible for missed notes and assignments.  Please contact another student from the class or email me for your assignment.  Upon your return, you must turn in all work that was due on the day of your absence.  You will have three days to turn in all work you missed while you were gone.  If you are absent the day of a quiz or test, you can take it upon your return or schedule a time to come and take the quiz or test.  If you are absent the day before a quiz or test, you will be required to take the quiz/test on the assigned day.

Calculators.  Calculators will not be used in this class until further notice.

Extra Credit.  There will be opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester.

BISHOP CARROLL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
2011-2012

Welcome to Honors Algebra II

“It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.”
~ James Thurber

Be Prepared…You will need a folder, notebook paper, a red pen, a pencil, your textbook, and your agenda book everyday.  If you happen to forget any of these items, you will have to use a pass to go back to your locker to fetch the item(s).  See policy below.

Grades…Points will be earned in the following categories:

*  Homework/Participation (18%):  Homework assignments will be worth 5 – 10 points based on completion, and/or correctness.  There will be an assignment almost every day.  On occasion these will be due at the end of class; most often they will be due at the start of class the following day with all work shown!  (No Work = No Credit.)  At random, it will be graded like a quiz.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.  Make-up work is accepted for full credit in the case of excused absences.  In the case of unexcused absences homework will be accepted for partial credit at my discretion.  If an assignment is missed because of in-school suspension you may turn that work in for 25% credit.  If it is missed because of out-of-school suspension you may turn it in for 10% credit.  After a chapter test has been taken, however, no work will be accepted from that chapter.  If you are absent from class please feel free to email me with a request for the day’s assignment.
***Note:  Homework must be done in pencil***

* Quizzes/Tests (72%):  at least one quiz every chapter.  Each quiz is usually worth 5 –15 points and may be announced or unannounced.  There will be at least one test every chapter and each test will contain questions relating to topics from previous chapters.
*Note:  If you are absent the day of a quiz or test you will have to schedule a time with me to make-up the item(s).  The make-up must be completed within one week of your return or you will receive a zero.  However, if you are only absent the day before a test you will be required to take the test with your classmates on the assigned day.

* Semester Exam (10%):  a cumulative semester test will be given both semesters.

*Note:  I will be following the diocesan grading scale as shown in the agenda.

Tardies…Passes are rarely issued in my class and will only be given if you have your agenda book.  You will only be allowed four passes per semester.  If you are late to class it will result in a demerit.  (You must be in the room at the start of the bell.)  Any unused passes will be rewarded with one homework point extra credit at the end of each semester.

Additional help…I am available to help students in Room 415 by appointment (except in the mornings on the first and second Thursdays of each month due to meetings).  I only teach zero hour and first hour.  Please let me know of any problems you are having and we will work something out.

***Note:  This course moves at a faster pace than the advanced algebra II course; therefore, students are required to process material faster.  The more rapid pace allows us to cover more concepts than the advanced course.

Cheating…is defined as giving or receiving unauthorized aid on exams, quizzes, papers, or homework assignments.  I operate on a zero-tolerance level.  This means that if you are caught participating in such actions you will receive a zero on that particular item and your parents will be notified.

Calculators… will not be used in this class in any capacity until further notice.

In addition to all of the aforementioned procedures I will also be enforcing all rules and regulations as set forth in the agenda.  Thank you for honoring the guidelines set up for your successful completion of the course!

Mrs. Berger
