Leticia C. Nielsen, President
“Faith
is the first factor of a life devoted to service.
Without faith, nothing is possible.
With it, nothing is impossible.” (Mary McLeod Bethune)
As
we close this school year, I would like to congratulate the members of the
Class of 2008. I hope that BCCHS
has prepared you well for life and that you will continue to grow in your
relationship with the Lord. Thank you for the memories and we will continue to pray for
each of you. Parents, we thank
you for your commitment to Catholic education and hope that you continue to
support our school community and pray for our success.
We
truly do appreciate all of your support for the Bishop Carroll Annual Fund
Drive, which ends on June 30th and our Building The Tradition Capital
Campaign. We have received
pledges of $10.3 million and the construction project is going well as long as
the weather cooperates. Our
enrollment is over 1100 students and it is imperative that we continue with
our building project in order to be able to accept and serve all of our
Catholic students that wish to attend Bishop Carroll.
Please encourage all of our patrons and future parents to support our
Capital Campaign. We have a
waiting list for the 2008-09 school year and we hope that we do not have to
turn away many of these students.
The
Valedictorians of the Class of 2008 were Drew Maly, son of Paul and Nancy Maly
and members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, and Sarah Rajewski, daughter of
Frank and Katie Rajewski and members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Our Salutatorian was Scott Whittle, son of Max and Angela Whittle and
members of St. Anne Parish.
Drew
Maly also received the Bishop David M. Maloney Award, which is presented to a
student who excels academically and demonstrates moral values, leadership
abilities and contributes to the Bishop Carroll community and the youth of the
Wichita Diocese.
The
Bishop’s Crest Award, which recognizes the graduate who exemplifies great
courage and commitment to developing their God-given talents and gifts to the
fullest, was awarded to Andrew Johansen.
Andrew is the son of Tom and Kathleen Johansen of St. Margaret Mary
Parish.
The
Outstanding Citizenship Award is presented to a graduating girl and boy who
have shown leadership at BCCHS, the Wichita Community, and in their Christian
Faith during their years of attendance at BC.
They have proven themselves to be dependable, responsible, helpful, and
dedicated to the Catholic faith. Congratulations
to Claire Suellentrop, daughter of Mike and Cathy Suellentrop of St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton Parish and Logan Winter, son of Duane and Jennifer Winter of St.
Joseph Parish, Andale, Kansas.
The
following students were awarded the Msgr. Arthur Barth High School Scholar
Award at the Senior Farewell Mass. Congratulations
to Jacob Belden, Eric Grimm, Drew Maly, Sarah Rajewski, Sarah Schwindt,
Anthony Seiler, Andrew Slagle, Zachary Smith and Kirk Sponsel.
I would like to acknowledge the following staff members who will not be
returning to BCCHS next year: Christina
Brouillette, Shannon Collins, Dan Engel, Carol Furrow, Lynette Koranda,
Michael Mapp, Sr. Mary Margaret Miller, IHM, Sally Pedruzzi, Betsy Robinson
and Marla Schinstock. In
addition, I would like to thank Bill Pickett for his 30 years of service to
our community as he retires from his teaching position.
To all of these individuals, “Thank you for the many years of service
and dedication you have given to our students, staff, and school.
We will miss you.”
This has been an excellent year for us at BCCHS. I hope that our students enjoy this summer and continue learning and furthering their education even though they may not be sitting in an actual class during their break. May your family have an enjoyable and relaxing faith-filled summer!

College
Credit for Senior Religion Honors Courses
BC Religion Department is pleased to
announce that Senior level honors religion courses can now be taken for
college credit through Newman University. Students wishing to obtain advanced
standing will need to take both Christian Vocation Honors as well as
Evangelization Honors. See Counseling office for more details.
Stewards
of Catholic Culture
The Religion department is instituting
a new religion elective next year entitled "Stewards of Catholic
Culture." This course is a ‘practicum’ style course that takes faith
and puts it into action. It will include formation in stewardship, the
apostolate of the laity, catechesis, various liturgical ministries, and in
methods of spirituality. It will be open to all sophomores, juniors and
seniors. This course will be focused more on practice of the faith than a
theoretical explanation of the faith. It will also include a heavy dose of
learning about parish life and structure. Students who take this course will
be required to volunteer in one full-year of catechetical instruction in a
parish (usually two hours one night/day a week). Students who successfully
complete this year of training will be certified as "Basic
Catechists" for the Diocese of Wichita.
Stewardship
Hours
As many parents may have heard Bishop Carroll Religion courses are taking the next step forward on required stewardship hours. For the past three years Religion classes have been informally assigning stewardship hours similar to the required senior volunteer hours. Next year these stewardship hours will be formally required of all students at Bishop Carroll. Freshman will be required 10 hours of service to the family, sophomores...15 hours of service to parish, juniors...20 hours to needy and socially marginalized and seniors... 25 hours to the Wichita community. In order to alleviate the pressure of busy schedules sophomores, juniors and seniors can fulfill these hours DURING THE SUMMER preceding the school year. This will be a great help to school year schedules. However, ALL HOURS MUST BE VERIFIED ON AN ACCOUNTABILITY FORM in order for them to be accepted (one form should be filled out for each "block" of service hours). This is very important because all forms will be saved in a student file so that they can be used in the future for resumes, scholarhip's or applications. All information concerning Stewardship hours can be found on the Bishop Carroll web page (BCCHS.ORG). Please read the requirements carefully so that the hours of service will be accepted. Also, the accountability form can be printed off the web page and filled out to be turned in at the beginning of the school year next year. If you have any questions you may call Fr. Jarrod at 304-5291.
All-school Mass and Class Retreats are essential to a fully rounded Catholic education. As such, both events are mandatory. Even if a student were to miss due to excused absences the equivalent amount of time missed must be made up. Mandatory Mass and Retreats are to be viewed with the same educational and formational value as a normal class period. Just as all students are required to make up class work when missing class for any reason so too is such a requirement placed on All-school Mass and Retreats.
1)
If
an all-school Mass is missed it will be made up by
a.
Attending
two daily Masses after school within the next two weeks of the date missed.
b.
Doing
two hours of adoration to be verified by Fr. Jarrod
2)
If
a retreat day is missed it may be made up by:
a.
Attending
another retreat day, not during school, approved by Fr. Jarrod.
b.
Doing
an equivalent amount of time in adoration and/or Mass (A total of six hours to
be verified by Fr. Jarrod).
3)
If
part of a retreat day is missed or a student is late the equivalent time will
be made up in adoration and/or a daily Mass after school.
4)
Failure
to fulfill this make-up policy will result in additional hours or a meeting
with the chaplain and the pastor of the student’s parish.
An online Island Mini Golf Tournament was held in the library before finals began. It was a time to relax for a little friendly competition. It was held after school. Luke Dold was the winner with Christian Beck in second and Christina Wiggins in third. Students took a library survey in their English classes. Preliminary results confirm the observation that students rely heavily on computers and would like more available. Though our database Ebscohost and the Kan-Ed databases need more promotion. They are available from any computer at home or school.
Students entering grades 9-12 in fall
2008 may join the Teens Read program at the Wichita Public libraries.
Prizes are earned based on the time spent reading – and any reading
– graphic novels, newspaper, etc. counts.
No book reports necessary! Along with physical activity, daily reading
is a good way to keep those brain cells ready for the next school year!
Public libraries also offer some fun and entertaining programs for
teens. Visit the public library
this summer and you’ll never need to say you’re bored!

The 2007-2008 Annual Fund Drive
continues through June, and these are our numbers as we go to press:
The students are participating in their
own division with, 881 of our 1060 students pledging $4,465 in gifts and
copious prayers. This is a
marvelous 83% participation rate, and we continue to collect those pledges.
So far in our Parent Division, 485 of
our 972 households have pledged for a 50% participation rate, and 382 have
fulfilled those pledges. Our goal
is $350,000 again this year, but we have received $271,000 in pledges.
This number does not include the many parent gifts pledged and received
in the Building The Tradition Capital Campaign.
I want to publicly thank our Annual
Fund phonathon volunteers who worked evenings in March to raise $36,000 in
pledges for BC: Connie Arnold,
Ann Bahr, Sherry Berger, Quentina Bevan, Sally Bouska, Anne Buckett, Jim
Carney, Lisa Cox, Susan Crum, Ann Daigle, Kellie Dockers, Russ & Lori
Doerneman, Margaret Dresher, Debbie Eller, Myron & Carolyn Ewy, Lisa
Haffner, Karen Hanna, Anne Marie Hausfeld, Shanna Henry, Nancy Hoppis, Deb
Marquez, Jo Ellen Martin, Barb Meyer, Lori Miranowki, Dave Northcutt, Beth
Orth, Kim Parsons, Karen Radell, Valerie Shirkey, Rocky Stroot, and Laurie
Tasset.
We wish to also thank all who have
helped in any way during this past school year, especially the BCPO Academics
and Activities Committees, the Annual Fund Drive Leadership, the various
Building The Tradition Gift Solicitation Committees (over 70 volunteers), the
Building Construction Committee,
the office and special event volunteers, and our prayer groups.
Together we all make BCCHS an excellent school and an awesome
community! Have a safe and
blessed summer!
Building
The Tradition
During
this summer work will proceed on the activities complex and 13-classroom
shell. The weather has cooperated
for the most part this spring, so the project continues on track, with
projected finish date May ’09!
President
Nielsen and the Major Gift Committees continue in the “silent” phase of
the capital campaign to raise funds through June 30. The diocese may then extend our deadline through August.
Please continue to pray for our project!

Parent sports meetings are an excellent
way to keep lines of communication open between the athletic department,
coaches, and parents at Bishop Carroll. Parents
are given the opportunity to meet with the head coach of the sport your son or
daughter plans to participate in and learn how to work with the coach to raise
responsible students. Although
much of the information covered at these yearly meetings remains the same, we
feel that it is important for parents to be reminded of the academic,
substance abuse, sportsmanship policies which are in effect.
Unfortunately, there are always individuals who abuse policies and then
accuse the school of failing to communicate policies and standards.
The meetings are an excellent way to communicate with parents. Please
mark the following dates on your calendar.
·
Fall
Sports Parents’ Meeting, Wednesday, August 13 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, August
17 at 4:00 PM in the auditorium. Fall
practices begin Monday, August 18.
·
Winter
Sports Parents’ Meeting, Wednesday, November 12 at 7:00 PM in the
auditorium. Winter sports practices begin Monday, November 17.
·
Spring
Sports Parents’ Meeting, Thursday, February 26 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium
(Wednesday is Ash Wednesday). Spring

COLLEGE VISITS
Students in the class of 2009 should take the opportunity to visit college campuses this summer. Viewing a campus and visiting with those on campus can help with the college selection process.
Jenna Simpson and Audrey Garrett will
be co-editors of the Flyer next year. Simpson will be a senior and a
third-year staff member; Garrett, who will be a junior, will be on the staff
for the second year.
“I’m really excited for the Flyer
next year because I think we’re going to have a lot of great newcomers on
staff, and I believe our skills will carry us on to an All-Kansas title for
the third year in a row,” Simpson said.
Added Garrett, “I’m really happy to
have the opportunity to be one of the editors next year. Everyone is very
talented and works well together, so I’m excited to see what we can do to
improve the paper next year.”
Bishop Carroll journalism continued its
strong tradition by winning the state championship for the third consecutive
year. Carroll won the Class 5A title at the Kansas Scholastic Press
Association contest on May 3 at the University of Kansas.
Carroll took first with 30 points,
followed by Mill Valley with 27.
Clay Kimbro (yearbook sports writing)
and Ben Pirotte (sports photography) won individual titles. Second-place
winners were Audrey Garrett (headlines) and Christian Beck (yearbook sports
writing).
Claire Suellentrop (feature writing)
and Sarah Rajewski (newspaper design) took third.
Honorable mention went to Sophie Mans
(advertising), Kimbro (cutlines), Audrey Wise (cutlines), Eric Grimm (news
writing), Drew Hoffman (newspaper sports) and Sarah Rajewski (editing).
Congratulations to Kollen Long who was
voted journalism teacher of the year in 2008.
The Flyer, Bishop Carroll’s student
newspaper, received an All-Kansas rating - the highest honor possible - at the
state journalism contest. It was the second year in a row, and eighth time in
the past 10 years, that the newspaper has received the honor.
An All-Kansas newspaper is described by
the Kansas Scholastic Press Association as a “quality newspaper that would
compete well at any level.”
The out-of-state judge said that the
Flyer is a “pleasure to read” and that the writing is “excellent.” The
judge complimented the staff on news coverage of important issues, saying they
were handled “thoroughly and objectively, using credible sources and
background to explain their significance.”
Senior editors of the Flyer were Rosie
Hoefling, Alice Jones, Sarah Rajewski and Claire Suellentrop. Ben Pirotte was
photo editor. Sophie Mans was business manager. Nicollette Ternes was design
editor.

Senior Ben Pirotte received honorable
mention for his photo Guadalupe dancers in the nationally acclaimed 2008
Jostens’ Photo Contest. The annual competition, co-sponsored by Jostens and
Wolfe’s Camera, recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of student
photographers throughout the country.
Pirotte was among 101 winners selected
from more than 5,000 entries in this annual photography contest that has
participation from across the country. Submissions are judged on composition,
artistic merit, and technical qualities, as well the ability to convey a
compelling story.
“This
photography competition recognizes the sophisticated, high quality photography
being produced by students in schools all across the country,” said Gary
Lundgren, Jostens’ senior program manager/education. “Our contest provides
a forum for them to showcase their work and to be honored for their unique
talents. Competition is steep. Receiving this honor is quite an
accomplishment.”
Pirotte’s winning photograph, along
with all other winning photographs, will be featured on the Jostens.com
Website. They will also be featured in the 2009 issue of the Jostens Gotcha
Covered Look Book, a popular resource for yearbook advisers and staffs seeking
creative ideas, trends and inspiration.

excellent showing of tenth place in the state competion. Thanks to our
coaches, Chuck Hill and Jann Crownover.
Thank you for
allowing me to help keep your children healthy and safe in school for another
school year. During the summer I will be checking mail,
e-mail and phone weekly. If you have questions, please use one of those
methods to contact me.
I would encourage you to get immunizations done early. All students are
expected to have complete immunization records before registration. That means
that any boosters required should be done and documentation to me on or before
registration days. You have been reminded by mail earlier in the spring.
Any child who needs
accommodations for health reasons should have a Health Care Plan which is a
cooperative effort between the parent, physician, student and involved school
staff. The plan will be agreed upon by all and
shared with teachers as needed. This plan may be simple or complex depending
on the student. Please contact me early so we can work on these plans before
school starts in August.
Finally, I would like
to hear from any parents who are nurses and interested in volunteering some of
their time to school nurse needs. These needs are primarily in our feeder
schools where there is no nurse. On occasion we could use some help at BCCHS
when I am absent or need help with screening events. We are having a lunch
meeting at St. Francis of Assisi in the Stewardship Hall on June 11 at noon.
This will be a time for all of the school nurses in Wichita Catholic schools
to celebrate that school is out and to invite those nurse parents to learn
more about what we do and the stewardship opportunities we can offer. Let me
know if you can come. e-mail-voborilpam@bcchs.org or BCCHS-722-2390.
