Building The Tradition
Phase I of our Building The Tradition building project began last November, and construction is right on schedule. The huge hole excavated is being filled with concrete walls, pillars, and concrete block separating the locker room, office, and shower spaces. Backfilling proceeds as we go to press, moving some off the dirt pile on the front lawn! Chris Baalmann 01, the project engineer for Simpson & Associates, projects that the activities center will be completed next spring, barring unforeseen bad weather.
The shell for 13 additional classrooms is visible atop the concrete floor which projects south from the existing academic halls. Five science labs and 8 regular classrooms will be finished in Phase I.
The entire project is funded by the Building The Tradition Capital Campaign which continues in its “silent phase” of donor cultivation. The campaign has raised $10.3 million in pledges, with $17.5 million needed for the entire building and renovation project that includes expanded commons and new auditorium. The development department continues to work towards that goal.

The Class of 2008 graduated on Sunday, May 18, in ceremonies at Century II Concert Hall. Bishop Michael Jackels and President Leticia Nielsen conferred diplomas after a prayer service and homily. Co-valedictorians were Drew Maly and Sarah Rajewski, and salutatorian was Scott Whittle. The Bishop’s Crest Award went to Andy Johansen, and the Citizenship Awards to Claire Suellentrop and Logan Winter. This year’s scholar athletes were Stephanie Harshberger, Drew Maly, and Brett Steven.
BCCHS Teacher Named State's Best in Journalism
A journalism teacher from the
Wichita area has been named the best in Kansas.
Kollen Long, the journalism adviser for Bishop
Carroll Catholic High School, has won the Jackie Engel Award for 2008.
In addition, last March he was named State Journalism Teacher of the
Year.
The Engel Award, sponsored by the Kansas
Associated Collegiate Press, is named in honor of Jackie Engel, a former
journalism teacher at McPherson High School who devoted more than two decades to
teaching journalism. She and her
students brought national recognition to Kansas high-school journalism.
Engel died Jan. 23, 2005. Through this award, her memory lives on.
Long advises the student newspaper, The Flyer,
and a community journalism project called The Talon.
He also helps students submit work to The Catholic Advance, the
newspaper serving the Catholic Diocese of Wichita.
Long was chosen because of his
commitment to teaching excellence and because he practices what he teaches.
In addition to teaching and advising, Long works as a sportswriter for The
Wichita Eagle.
Long has advised The Flyer
for 11 years, and in that time, the publication has won numerous awards and
accolades. In a nomination letter, former student Jennifer Torline wrote,
"I am sure many journalism students would agree with me in saying that this
success would not have been possible without Mr. Long's dedication and
helpfulness."
Anne Christiansen-Bullers, adviser of the student
newspaper at Johnson County Community College, honored Long at two ceremonies.
The first was at the KACP spring conference April 7 in Wichita. The second was
at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association's state conference May 3 in Lawrence.
Engel was the first recipient of

The music department sent 91 students to the State Solo and Small Ensemble Music Festival in Newton on Saturday, April 26. To participate at the state level each solo or ensemble must have received a "I" rating at the regional competition that was held on the 12th. The groups participating were the Madrigals, Chanterelles, a brass ensemble, a clarinet quartet and two percussion ensembles. Also, 19 BC students performed solos at the state event.
Overall the Band received 19 Superior Ratings: Chris Scherer received 3, Kelsey Nutter 2, and one each to Julie Supinie, Matt Cott, Noah Gear, Matt Samms, Corrie Cartwright, Zack Buckingham, Ryan Arnold, Luke Arnold, Jose Robledo, Mike Eastman, Ben Pierce, Michael Eller, Jake Suellentrop, and Trevor Steinbrock. The results from State solo and ensemble include Meg Hanna, Alyssa Schmidt, Jackie Vonfeldt, and Caitlin Marrero who received a "I" or Superior Ratings. The Madrigals, Chanterelles, Erin Reazin, Sarah Schwindt, and Laurie Stead received a "II" or Excellent Rating.
BCCHS students competed in the National History Day Regional at Wichita State. In the category of Historical Papers, Drew Hoffman placed 3rd, Shauna O’Dell 2nd, and Rachel Stanley 1st. In Group Exhibits, Patrick Berry and Lucas Schippers took 3rd, Trevor Steinbrock and Brian McMillan placed 2nd, and Sarah Scrafford and Anh N. Nguyen placed 1st. In Individual Exhibits, Gretchen Strathe took 3rd, Anh H. Nguyen placed 2nd, and Shelby Brown 1st. In Group Documentary, Rebecca Ast and Sam Lentz took 2nd, and in Individual Documentary, Nathan Fisher earned 1st. In Website Design, Matt Voboril placed 2nd, and Christine Barragree and Kayla Clasen took 1st.
Those finishing in the top two of each division qualified for the state competition in Topeka on April 26. There Christine Barragree and Kayla Clasen finished 2nd in Website Design, qualifying to go to the national contest at College Park, MD, in June.
Bishop Carroll Journalism, defending Class 5A state
journalism champions, won their third
consecutive state journalism championship at KU on May 3.
Individual championships went to Ben Pirotte in sports photography and Clay Kimbro in yearbook sports writing. Other BC students submitting winning works were Sophie Mans, advertising; Clay Kimbro and Audrey Wise, cutlines; Sarah Rajewski, editing and newspaper design; Claire Suellentrop, feature writing; Audrey Garrett, headlines; Eric Grimm, news writing; Drew Hoffman, newspaper sports; Christian Beck, yearbook sports.
In addition, the Flyer was named one of the state’s best school papers, and received an All-Kansas rating, the highest rating possible, for the second straight year. Instructor Kollen Long was named the State Journalism Teacher of the Year.

The 2007-2008 Annual Fund Drive continues through June, and these are our numbers as we go to press:
The Students participated in their own division with 882 of our 1058 students pledging $4480 in gifts and copious prayers. This is a marvelous 83% participation rate, and we continue to collect those pledges. So far, more than 260 have fulfilled their pledges.
In our Parent Division, 479 of our 966 households have pledged at a 50% participation rate (down from last year’s 56%), and 382 have fulfilled those pledges. Our goal is $350,000 again this year, but we have received $272,000 in pledges.

On Thursday, April 17, BCCHS hosted more than 350 grandparents of current students. Mass (optional for students) was celebrated with Chaplain Fr. Jarrod Lies in the gym, after which the Parents’ Organization hosted a cookie reception for the grandparents and their grandchildren.

Rose Graf Bunton 77 has opened the Ultimate Avon Beauty Center store in Lexington Square, Maple & Maize Road.
Chris Gulick 77 has 14 sculptures featured in the exhibit “interACTIVE” at the Wichita Art Museum through February 2009. He and his partners Lee Shiney and Tom McGuire have the entire “Living Room” at the museum, and he recommends taking children to “play with” the many interactive works. LtCol Michael Gann USMC 82
is the Commanding Officer of 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) and
currently deployed to Iraq for the second time. His teams are imbedded
throughout the Iraqi Army and responsible for calling in close air support and

Deborah (Bates) Kill 86 just retired from the Kansas Air National Guard as a MSgt with 20 years. “ It was the best decision I ever made, and such a wonderful feeling of completing something so major. God is so good!” she writes. Her email is usplus321@sbcglobal.net.
Stanley & Christina Carbajal Bluml 88-89 live outside of Wichita between Clearwater and Haysville and enjoy the "country" life on their 2 acres of land with baby Rica. Stan is still with Westar Energy, working as a journeyman lineman and has been there for 19 years! Chris works at Exploration Place, serving as marketing director for seven years.
Sonia Garcia 91 graduated from FBI training in Quantico, VA, last April, and has a three-year assignment in New York City as a special agent.
Dan Goebel 92 has been named vice president of homebuilder sales and product management at Star Lumber & Supply’s Flooring & Decorating Division. He and wife Ariann (Hilger) 93 have three children, Raeley, Alaina and Grant.
Jason Pedruzzi 93 won the arm wrestling championship at this year’s RiverFest.

Thummel 94 is a CPA and has joined the tax department of Allen, Gibbs &
Houlik as a supervisor. He and wife
Staci live in west Wichita with children Nolan, Luke, Mary Carolyn and Jocelyn.
Anne Anderton Warren 94 was selected by the Wichita Business Journal as one of the top "40 Under 40" business professionals for 2007. The award is given to high achievers under age 40 each year.
Angie Hinton McDonald 95 opened Change It Up with her mother, specializing in decluttering, organization, budgeting and redecorating assistance of average Wichita families. Check out their website at changeitupkansas.com.
Stephanie Graf 96 is Cessna Aircraft’s Customer Solutions Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMA), managing contracts for Citation Jet customers. Last month she participated in EBACE – the European Aviation Trade Show held in Switzerland. She has a BA from Friends in International Business with minors in German and Publications. She also attended Philipps Universitaet in Marburg, Germany, is fluent in German, and is working on her Green Belt certification.
Chris Youngers 96 is a financial advisor for Banc of America Investment Services in Kansas City. He also helps with recruiting in the Bank of America Premier Banking and Investments Department. He and wife Becky live in Gardner KS, and he can be reached at 816-979-4321.
Denise Stutey 97 is a licensed master social worker who works for Catholic Charities Community Counseling Services, Wichita.
Molly Harris 98 graduated in December ’07 from Webster University on McConnell Air Force Base with her masters in business and organizational security management. She is currently a member of the Emergency Support Unit with Sedgwick County Emergency Management.
Luke Stephen 98 works for Rusty Eck Ford and recently received the Employee Excellence Award and was recognized nationally for sales and customer satisfaction excellence by the Ford Motor Company.
Mai “Mina” Nguyen 99 is an architect in Portland, OR, where she works for GBJ Architects, a healthcare architecture firm.
Miguel Sabas 01 graduated from WSU this May with a major in international business and minors in management and Spanish. He is job hunting in Kansas.
Gina-Ann Axman Cole 02 graduated last May from WSU Barton School of Business with honors, majoring in marketing and real estate. She works at Office This (formerly the Wichita Mall on Harry). She and husband Lee just bought a home in east Wichita.
Sofia Jaramillo 02 received Via Christi’s “New-to-Nursing” St. Catherine of Siena Award. She was a BC St. Gianna Catholic Health Academy student and is now an RN in the intensive care unit at the St. Francis Campus.
Stephen Isley 05
attends the University of Tulsa and was recently inducted into Phi Beta Kappa,
the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the United States. There
are only 276 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the country, and
The University of Tulsa is one of two institutions in the state of Oklahoma that
has a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Benedict-Joseph “BJ” Axman 07 joined the Kansas Air National Guard and
graduated from Air Force basic training on March 7 at Lackland AFB, San Antonio.
He now is attending USAF Medical Training School at Sheppard AFB, Wichita
Falls, TX. He has completed EMT training that is part of his training
and is a national certified EMT. He
hopes to be back in Wichita this fall to start college.
Hanna Girrens 08 received
a four-year scholarship worth $157,000 from the US Army ROTC Program to attend
Oklahoma State University this fall.
Jordan Keller 08 placed first at the National High School Coaches Association wrestling tournament this year. He is the first wrestler from Kansas to win a national title since 1998 and only the 6th ever!
Drew Maly 08 was one of eleven top scholar athletes of Kansas who was recognized by the Sunflower Chapter of The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame on April 24 at KSU. Chosen for his academic success and generous volunteerism as well as his excellence on the playing field, this three-sport athlete also was the one who gave the “scholar-athlete response” at the banquet. He plans to attend Benedictine and study pre-med.

Bishop Carroll Cross Country Alumni Run
All former Bishop Carroll cross country runners and other members of our running community are invited: Prior to the Bishop Carroll Cross Country Invitational at Lake Afton on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 8:00 AM, there will be a 2 mile alumni run. The race is open to anyone wishing to run on the challenging course. Medals will be given to the top male and female runners in each of two categories (graduated 10 years or less, graduated over 10 years ago). The Baseball team ended their season 3rd in the City League with a 13-9 record. They are coached by social studies teacher Charlie Ebright.
Coach Jennifer Bachman 93 Unrein’s Softball team finished in the City in a 3-way tie with Heights and Northwest. They won sub-state and placed 2nd at State!
Boys Tennis won the City League, unbeaten in the regular season and 2nd at the GWAL meet. They placed 3rd at regionals and 10th at State, coached by Darren Huslig and Dan Engel.
Boys Golf, coached by Mark Berger, finished 3rd in the City and placed 10th at State at McPherson’s Turkey Creek.
English teacher John Barber coached the Girls Soccer team to a 6th place finish in the City League with several ladies earning All-City honors.
Boys Track, coached by social studies teacher Cory Swords, placed 3rd in the City meet, and went on to regionals and State May 23 at WSU.
The Girls Track team, coached by science teacher Ran Nielsen, placed 2nd at the City League meet and 2nd at Regionals. Alyssa Northcutt broke the BC javelin record with a 121’8” throw this season, Cara Detmer vaulted 11’, and Nate Arnold vaulted 14’!

Six teams were crowned City League Champions this school year. Our teams continue to represent us well and we are very proud of their accomplishments. Softball, and boys tennis join volleyball, girls cross country, boys cross country and wrestling as City League Champs!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MALE AND FEMALE SENIOR SCHOLAR ATHLETE FOR 2007 - 2008. Each year, our head coaches recognize an outstanding senior boy and girl athlete/scholar. Two boys were chosen by our coaches: Brett Steven and Drew Maly (both football and basketball). The girl winner was Stephanie Harshberger (volleyball and softball). Brett and Stephanie are also Bishop Carroll’s nominees for the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission male and female high school athlete of the year.
OTHER HONORS/RECOGNITIONS: Tennis again repeated as Greater Wichita Athletic League champions this spring and was undefeated in city league duals. Individual City League accomplishments: Kevin Klein and Jordan Keller placed first in #1 Doubles (fourth consecutive year Kevin took first at #1dbls). Nathan Feldkamp and Cody Potts placed first at #2 doubles. Colin Wasinger placed 7th at #1singles. Brian Vuong was 3rd at #2 singles. Regionals results: Kevin Klein and Jordan Keller placed first. State results: Kevin Klein and Jordan Keller placed 7th.
Our girls soccer team contains many freshmen and sophomores. Despite this being a building year, we did quite well, advancing to the regional finals. These ladies received All City Honors: 1st Team Defense Stefanie Wiesen. 2nd Team Offense Rachel Wiesen, Gretchen Strathe. Honorable Mention Offense Mallory Walden, Allison McMillan. Honorable Mention Defense Sarah Ohm. Honorable Mention Goal Keeper Monica DeRee.
Softball again won the City League title, finishing in a tie with Northwest and Heights. They won regionals. Players receiving All City honors include: 1st team - Katie Armagost – pitcher and Stephanie Harshberger - 1st base. 2nd team all-city - Megan Seiwert – Pitcher. Honorable Mention - Erica Hampton – Catcher,, Briana Hallacy – outfield, and Jessica Kayl - 3rd base. We are saddened to announce the head Coach, Jennifer Bachman Unrein 93 is stepping down this year. She was an assistant five years and head coach the past five years. Her teams won four Greater Wichita Athletic League titles and one KSHSAA Class 5A State Championship title along with a second and a third place finish at the state tournament
Baseball finished the season with a 13-9 record and finished in third place in the City League. The following received All City Honors. 2nd Team Ashton Hoffman – pitcher, Brandon Tangney – outfield, Cody Mills – first base, Zach Nielsen – pitcher. Honorable Mention: Jacob Cole – catcher, Chad Duling – short stop, David Ternes – outfield, Adam Brand – outfield, Matt Jacobs – utility, Dustin Moses – pitcher, and Zach Stucky - outfield. Cody Mills and Brandon Tangney made first team All State Class 5A. Ashton Hoffman and Chad Duling received 2nd team All State honors honors.
Bishop Carroll golfers placed third at both the City League Meet and Regionals. Caleb Childs place 4th at City League. Aaron Peterson was fifth and Caleb Childs tenth at regionals.
The girls track team placed 2nd at the City League Meet. Congratulations to City League Champions Cara Detmer, Alyssa Northcutt, and Julia Brugman. Cara won the City League pole vault setting a new Bishop Carroll and league record with a vault of 11 feet. Alyssa Northcutt placed first in javelin. She also placed second at pole vault. Julia Brugman won the City League title, placing 1st in the 800m run. Other medallists at the City League Meet were 200m Haley Urban 6th, 800m Anastasiya Meninstrina 2nd, Dana Bahr 4th. 1600m Katie Hamlin 2nd, Andrea Sander 6th. 3200m Katie Hamlin 2nd, Sarah Rajewski 6th. 100 Low Hurdles Kristen Sponsel 4th, Jessica Sponsel 6th. 300m hurdles Kristen Sponsel 2nd. High Jump Desiree Wilson 3rd. Long Jump Desiree Wilson 5th. Shot Put Molly Voth 4th. Discus Molly Voth 6th. The 4x100 relay team (Lydia Leija, Haley Urban, Alyssa Northcutt, Desiree Wilson) placed 4th, 4x400 (Kristen Sponsel, Dana Bahr, Haley Urban, Julia Brugman) 2nd and 4x800 (Anastasiya Meninstrina, Andrea Sander, Dana Bahr, Julia Brugman) 2nd. The girls team placed 2nd at regionals. Qualifying for the state track meet May 23 and 24 are Pole vault Cara Detmer 1st (tying the school record at 11 feet), Alyssa Northcutt 3rd. 800m Julia Brugman 1st. 300 hurdles Kristen Sponsel 1st, Jessica Sponsel 4th. High jump Desiree Wilson 1st, Hannah Lubbers 2nd. 200 Haley Urban 4th. 100 hurdles Jessica Sponsel 3rd. Long jump Desiree Wilson 2nd. Discus Molly Voth 3rd. 4x800 relay 1st. 4x100 relay 4th. 4x400 relay 2nd. In addition to Cara Detmer setting a new Bishop Carroll record this year (pole vault, 11’), there were two other school records set: Alyssa Northcutt 121’8” in javelin at the regional meet and Desiree Wilson 5’2 ˝” in high jump. At state, Desiree broke the BC record again high jumping 5’4” to take 2nd place at State.
The boys track placed 3rd at the City League meet. Lone City League champ was Nate Arnold in the pole vault. Luke Arnold placed 2nd and Brett Gross was third in a sweep of this event. Other medallists at the league meet were: 200m: Corey Urban 4th, Alex Kuchinskas 5th. 400 meters: Alex Kuchinskas, 3rd, Preston Maus 5th, Corey Urban 6th. 1600m: Scott Ufford 3rd, Cliff Kissling 5th. 3200m: Bryce Volz 2nd, Scott Ufford 4th. 110m high hurdles: Kyle Long 4th, Mark Powell 5th. 300m hurdles: Kyle Long 2nd, Mark Powell 4th. 2000m steeplechase: Andrew Schinstock 4th, Andy Schepis 5th. High jump: Nathan Pascal and Josh Rohleder tied for 6th. Triple jump: Nick Johansen 4th, Javelin: Eric Hentzen 4th. The 4x100m relay team (Preson Maus, Brett Gross, Blake Rollins, Nick Johansen) placed 5th, 4x400 (Alex Kuchinskas, Kyle Long, Preston Maus, Corey Urban) 3rd and 4x800 (Kyle Martens, Josh Rohleder, Jacob Leland, Zach Reynolds) 6th. Girls swimming finished 7th in the City League. The young squad continues to improve, and we look forward to good things from them in the future. Andrea Ellsworth is stepping down as head girls coach but will remain as boys coach. Replacing Andrea is Jessica Mitchell who will be teaching Spanish next year at Bishop Carroll.
Congratulations to Mikelann Anderson. She has been selected by the Kansas Bowling Coaches Association to receive Class 5-1A First Team All State Honors in bowling.
Final Winter Note
The boys and girls basketball teams finished 2nd in State play. For the boys, it was the first time in school history that they had played for the state championship and it was a first for both the boys and girls to play for the State Championship the same year. GREAT JOB!!!
The following boys received All State Basketball Honors: Boys: Brett Steven - 1st Team 5A , 3rd Team Overall. Luke Barnwell - Honorable Mention 5A. Joe Brown - Honorable Mention 5A. Girls: Julia Marshall received 1st Team 5A, 2nd Team Overall. Also receiving All State Class 5A honors were Abby Fawcett – 2nd Team, and Teresa Zienkewicz-Honorable Mention.

by the state athletic directors at their conference last March 1in Hutchinson.

or fewer demerits!
