Thur 17 Jan 2013

Friday, March 15th is the annual Blood Drive at Bishop Carroll. Signups are during lunch Friday, March 8th - Thursday, March 14th. Students 16 and older qualify. If you are 16 pickup a permission slip prior to the final signup day on Thursday. On the day of donation make sure to bring a photo ID listing your birth date.

ALSO: Parents and members of the community are also welcome to donate blood at our drive. To schedule an appointment, call Gus Henry at (316) 300-6934, email gus.henry@me.com or schedule an appointment online by clicking here.

Bishop Carroll Development Director Karen Gomez is a long time blood donor. She has donated over 126 pints, which equates to over 15 gallons. She began in 1976 as a way to "give back, get a free snack, and save a life." She suggests students donate "to start a good habit of generosity, because it's easy to do." Lastly, she reminds students who are donating to "eat breakfast and relax."

The Red Cross Tips before donating are...

  • Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet by eating iron rich foods, such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals and raisins.
  • Get a good night's sleep.
  • Drink an extra 16 oz. of water or nonalcoholic fluids before the donation.
  • Eat a healthy meal before your donation. Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice cream before donating. (Fatty foods can affect the tests we do on your blood. If there is too much fat in your blood, your donation cannot be tested for infectious diseases and the blood will not be used for transfusion.)
  • Remember to bring your donor card, driver's license or two other forms of ID.
