When parents send their children to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School they become part of a team whose sole purpose is the education of students.  This educational endeavor not only involves the parents, faculty, administration and staff of Bishop Carroll, but also the alumni, past parents, grandparents and friends who assist with their time, talent and treasure in keeping Bishop Carroll financially stable.

Answers for Our Parents and Constituents
Bishop Carroll Catholic High School is self-supporting, receiving no money from local, state or federal taxes or from the Diocese of Wichita.  Independent, non-parochial schools, like Bishop Carroll, rely on stewardship, some tuition income, annual contributions, endowment income and other fundraising efforts to meet operating expenses.
While being a diocesan school can be a challenge, it allows us the flexibility to design our own programs to fit the values and beliefs of our Bishop Carroll tradition.  The gift you make today ensures that we are able to sustain this mission for years to come.  We hope this article, with answers to the most commonly asked questions, will help you further understand our development initiatives.

I support the school by tithing/paying tuition.

Why doesn’t Bishop Carroll just raise fees to cover the costs?

Stewardship, tuition and fees cover approximately 79% of the cost of a Bishop Carroll education.  Like most private religious schools, Bishop Carroll relies on charitable giving to bridge the gap between revenue and expenses.  The administration, School Council, and Parents’ Organization are committed to making a Bishop Carroll Catholic education affordable to as many families as possible while maintaining the small, diverse community that makes Bishop Carroll such a special place.  Your gift to the Annual Fund is also tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law, whereas tuition is not.  Your Annual Fund gift may also qualify for a matching gift from your employer, which may allow you to double or even triple your support.  Tuition is not eligible for such matching gifts.

What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund Drive refers to gifts made on a yearly basis.  The money raised helps defray current-year operating expenses and supports the people and programs that make Bishop Carroll Catholic High School so unique – talented teachers, smaller class sizes, excellent resources and exceptional offerings from arts and athletics to mathematics and science.  Because these special assets have a major impact on the budget, we must turn to parents, grandparents, past parents, alumni and friends for financial support.  Know that there are others who have gone before you who continue to support Bishop Carroll Catholic out of gratitude for the opportunities a Bishop Carroll education has provided.

How can I make a gift to the Annual Fund?

All members of our BCCHS Community are given or sent “Invitations to Participate” in this year’s Annual Fund Drive in October or early November.  All are asked to prayerfully consider a gift to the school.

The way in which you choose to support Bishop Carroll Catholic High School is a matter of personal preference and circumstance.  A variety of giving opportunities has been designed to ensure the greatest giving benefits for you and for Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.  All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.  The Internal Revenue Service recognizes Bishop Carroll Catholic as a 501.c.3  non-profit organization.  Bishop Carroll Catholic High School accepts gifts via cash, check, or stock transfer.  To make your gift or receive more information, please contact the Development Office at 316-729-5274.

How much should I give?

It is our hope that Bishop Carroll Catholic High School will be your family’s top philanthropic priority after your parish support.  Individual gifts to the Annual Fund range from $10 to $10,000 or more.  Only you can decide how much you wish to commit.  Please know that no matter the amount, we need and appreciate every gift we receive.

What is the difference between an Annual Fund Drive and a Capital Campaign?

Annual Fund gifts are used for the general, annual expenses of the operating budget, like salaries, benefits and maintenance of the facility.  Capital giving is for building construction or renovation, technology enhancement and endowment to achieve long-term goals like expanding financial aid and faculty/staff compensation programs.  As the name implies Annual Fund gifts are made each year.  Capital Campaign gifts are usually larger and are pledged over three to five years.  A benefit to you is that both Annual Fund and Capital Campaign gifts are fully tax deductible.

What are endowment & grant funds used for?

An endowment is a gift of money or other assets received by the school, often for a specific purpose.  The principal is preserved and only the earnings and interest are used.  Endowments, carefully managed for growth as well as current income, are the foundation for the long-term stability and success of the school.  A named fund becomes a permanent tribute to the person whose name it bears and may always be augmented.  In many families donating to a grant fund established years ago has become a multi-generational tradition.  Donors to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School are welcome to contribute any amount to an existing endowed grant simply by making their gift and indicating an endowed designation.  New endowed grants may also be created at any time with money being allocated once the fund has reached $1 million.

What is planned giving?

Planned giving is a way for you to make a larger gift than you thought possible to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.  This may be as simple as remembering Bishop Carroll in your will.  There are also trusts and gifts of life insurance or property.  Each vehicle has specific advantages and may be tailored to your needs.  For more detailed information on planned gifts, please contact Karen Gomez at 316-729-5274 or gomezkaren@bcchs.org<mailto:ledudav@edgewood.k12.wi.us>.

When can I make my donation?

While donations are accepted at any time, there are many opportunities to support Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.  Please know that once you have made a gift of $300 or more you will not receive future Annual Fund solicitations this school year.  This includes the Spring Phonathon.
