Bishop Carroll Lists National Merit Scholars

Principal Vanessa Harshberger of Bishop Carroll Catholic High School announces that two of our students have been named National Merit Semi-finalists in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Sarah Rajewski and Drew Slagle.  Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of the 16,000 scholastically talented high school seniors on September 12, 2007.

Sarah is the daughter of Frank and Katie Rajewski of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.  Drew is the son of Scott and Diane Slagle of Sacred Heart Parish, Colwich.

In addition, five BCCHS students have been named National Merit Commended Scholars.  They are Jacob Belden, Jenna Donovan, Eric Grimm, Drew Maly, and Scott Whittle.

Jacob is the son of Steve and Connie Belden of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.  Jenna is the daughter of David Donovan and Sharyn Donovan of St. Francis.  Eric is the son of Hazel Grimm of St. Jude Parish.  Drew is the son of Paul and Nancy Maly of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  Scott is the son of Max and Angela Whittle of St. Anne’s Parish, Wichita.

More than 1.3 million juniors in over 21,000 high schools entered the 2008 Merit Program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October.  The Semi-finalists are among the approximate 16,000 students who have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards worth $34 million that will be offered in the spring.  To become finalists, semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be recommended by their principal, earn SAT scores that confirm their performance, participate in school and community activities, and submit a personal essay.
