Bishop Carroll Catholic High School

 Geometry    Advanced Geometry

GEOMETRY

INSTRUCTOR:  Jane Wiegand

TEXT:  Geometry  (Addison-Wesley)

Course Description:  This course is a study of the basic principles of Euclidean Geometry.  Some solid geometry will be introduced, although the main emphasis is on plane geometry.  Students are expected to learn and apply logical reasoning in the form of two-column proofs.

 Required Material:

                                    Textbook

Pencil--All assignments, tests and quizzes MUST be done in pencil.  Any work done in ink will not receive full

                credit.

Pen or Highlighter--This will be used to correct your work.  You may use any BRIGHT color, except RED (no black, silver, gray, etc.—I need to be able to read it late at night!)

                                White notebook paper

3-Ring Binder with two dividers (Labeled:  Assignments and Quizzes)

Calculator with a square root key and trig functions

(No cell phone or noise making calculators are allowed at any time.

Grading Scale:  The diocesan grading scale is posted on the classroom wall.

Grades:  Grades will be based upon a combination of assignments, tests, quizzes, and class performance.  Tests will be announced in advance.  Quizzes are generally unannounced; however, the lowest quiz grade at the end of each grading period may be dropped.    Homework will be assigned nearly every day, and it is to be completed BEFORE the beginning of the next class.  Work must be shown on all assignments, tests, and quizzes.  Homework, tests, and quizzes without work shown and without directions followed will not receive full credit and may result in a zero.  Late papers will be accepted only at the discretion of the teacher, and they will never be accepted once a chapter test has been taken.

Each test will be worth 100 points.   Quizzes will be worth 20 points each.   Homework will, generally, be worth 5-10 points.  If the homework and notes are completed, all work is shown, and all directions have been followed, you will generally receive the maximum points allowed.  Occasionally an assignment will be graded and points given for both accuracy and completion.  Adding the total points earned and dividing by the total possible points will determine the nine week’s grade.  Semester tests will be 10 percent of the total semester grade.  (Grades will be updated on Power Teacher at least every 5-8 school days.)

Behavior:  At ALL times, students are expected to be respectful to the teacher, and just as important, to each other.  (See the agenda and/or demerit card for more information.)   In addition , these rules also apply:  1.  All purses and bags must be kept under the desk.  2.  For extra warmth, only a BC sweater, official Parker sweatshirt, or blazer may be worn during class.

Make-up Work:  This is always your responsibility.  I will keep a daily assignment sheet posted on the closet door at the back of the classroom.  Check it for work that you might have missed.  Each missed assignment MUST contain notes taken over the covered section in the text, or the notes may be copied from another student who was in class that day.  After completing the missed assignments, it is then also the student’s responsibility to check the assignments before turning them in to me.  For a missed test (excused absence) please make arrangements to make it up.  Due to time constraints, make-up tests, generally, will be given after school.  If you participate in after school activities and/or practice or have a job, please keep this in mind.

                                                                                                                                                           (edited for 09-08)

Suspensions:  As outlined in the agenda, any student who has been suspended must complete all missed work.  All suspensions will result in 1/2 credit for that missed work.  This reduced credit value may also apply to any missed test or quiz during the suspension.   Unexcused absences and unexcused tardies will follow the same guidelines as a suspension.

Cheating:  Any student found to be copying another student’s homework, or allowing another student to copy his homework will receive a zero for that assignment, and an additional five points may be deducted from the total grade.  Any student found to be communicating in ANY way during a test or quiz will automatically lose AT LEAST five points on that test or quiz.  At least five points will be deducted for each infraction until all students have completed the test or quiz AND the teacher has notified the class that all tests have been completed and that talking is now allowed.  More serious infractions will result in a zero for that test or quiz.  For the more serious infractions, the student may also be reported to the office.  Further action could be taken.

If a student would like to meet with me before or after school for extra help, I am generally available in my classroom.  However, meetings and other commitments may cause me to be out of the classroom.  This is very important to remember when scheduling a make-up test or quiz.  Test and quiz make-ups must be scheduled.

EXTRA CREDIT---Occasionally an assignment or test will be given that contains some extra credit points.  Also there is the possibility of one extra credit opportunity each nine weeks.  All extra credit is voluntary and is available to all students.
