Why study Church History?

W     When one learns Church History, one gets to know Christ better, because the Church is the Body of Christ.

W

Studying Church History helps one to appreciate just how the Church has developed into the magnificent, beautiful, motherly institution she is today.

W     Thousands of people have labored, suffered, and loved, even to the point of death, so I could receive the Faith.  I must do the same for others.  Knowing their stories will help me to better appreciate my Faith and strengthen me to follow their example even in the midst of adversity.

Course Objectives:  We will study the History of the Church, from its cultural and Biblical foundations through the 21st century.

Behavior: At ALL times, students are expected to be respectful to the teacher, and just as important, to each other.  This includes no whining, arguing, or complaining, and acting as true ladies and gentlemen.  If a student disagrees with a decision I make, I ask that student to see me privately after class and explain his/her concern in a respectful manner, being open to accept my final decision.  (See the agenda and/or demerit card for more information.)

Consequences: While I will quickly forgive a student for an offence, that student must make reparation for the damage done due to his/her poor choice.  Reparation can be any of the following:  demerit(s), time after school, prayers, an extra assignment, an apology, an email or a phone call home, or a detention.  For a more serious offense, the reparation will be decided at the discretion of an administrator.  I reserve the right to ask for any of the above modes of reparation, or to decide on an action that better fits the offense.  Generally, reparation must be made within 24 hours of the offense, and reparation is doubled if the offense occurs in the Chapel or during times of prayer.

Grades: Grades will be based upon a combination of assignments, tests, quizzes, and class performance.  Tests will be announced in advance.  Quizzes are generally unannounced.  Homework will be assigned nearly every day, and it is to be completed BEFORE the beginning of the next class.  Late papers are rarely accepted, and only partial credit will be given in this rare case.  All late work must be completed, even if no credit is awarded, in order to receive full points for the notebook grade.

Each test will be worth 100 points.  Quizzes will be worth 10-20 points each.  Homework, projects, and reports will vary in point value.  Adding the total points earned and dividing by the total possible points will determine the nine-week’s grade.  Semester tests will be 10 percent of the total semester grade.  Grades will be updated on Power School every 5-8 school days.  (See agenda for grading scale.)

Class Participation:  Each nine weeks, each student will be given 50 participation points.  Points can be deducted each time a student is NOT in his/her assigned seat when the bell rings, if a student must go to the restroom during a lecture, failure to bring required materials to class, or other actions deemed time-consuming or disruptive.  Only a limited number of hall passes will be given to each student each semester.

Notebook:  All students are expected to keep a Church History 3-ring binder, containing all papers belonging in the following sections: 1. handouts, 2. notes and study questions, 3. graded assignments and review guides, 4. quizzes and tests.  Notebook grades are taken 1-2 times per nine weeks, and count as a test grade.  Periodic “notebook checks” are unannounced and count as a daily grade.  For a “notebook check,” I will look for the notes and assignments for the past few days.

Extra Credit:  Occasionally an assignment or test will be given that contains some extra credit points.  There is the possibility of one extra credit opportunity each nine weeks.  All extra credit is voluntary and is available to all students.

Make-up Work: This is always your responsibility.  I will keep a daily assignment sheet posted on the closet door at the back of the classroom.  Check it for work that you might have missed.  All work must be completed within 2 days of returning from an excused, unplanned absence.  This includes any notes taken during class.  The student must write “absent” and the date of the absence on the top of the papers turned in.

If a student is at school at any time on the day an assignment is due, even if Church History class is missed, that student must get the assignment to me that day in order to receive credit.  For a missed test (excused absence), please arrange to make it up within 2 days.  Due to time constraints, make-up tests, generally, will be given after school.  If you participate in after school activities and/or practice, please keep this in mind.

Fun activities:  In order to participate in any celebrations or excursions, the student must have all work completed.  If not, the student will miss the activity in order to complete missing work in a study hall.

Accommodations:  I am more than happy to accommodate the particular needs of a student.  If you have a need, please communicate that to me as the need arises, rather than after the fact.

Extra help:  I am available to students for assistance before or after school.  I appreciate you letting me know ahead of time when to expect you.
