 Course Objective

The primary purpose of this course is to build a foundation of basic skills and properties of Algebra I and develop problem solving skills and logical thinking.

 Course Materials

You will need the following everyday: textbook, pencil, red pen, notebook paper, and a 3-ring binder (1 inch) with dividers labeled Organizers, Goals and Reflections, Assignments, Quizzes, and Tests.  You may keep your notes in a spiral or in your binder on loose leaf paper.

 Course Grades

During each nine-week period, points will be earned in the following categories:

1.      Chapter Exams and Reflection Assignments (50%)

·         After each chapter you will have an exam over the covered material.  Exams will be announced and reviewed for during class.  Chapter exams will be recorded out of 100 points.

·         There will also be a reflection/self-assessment assignment after each chapter worth 10 points.

2.      Quizzes (20%)

·         Throughout each chapter there will be quizzes worth 10 – 25 points.  Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.

 3.      Homework (30%)

·         Homework will be assigned daily and must be completed in pencil!!  Each assignment will be worth 5 points based on completion and/or correctness.  Each assignment will be due at the start of class the following day with all work shown (no work = no credit).  Assignments should be folded lengthwise with your name and assignment appearing in the upper right hand corner.  Multiple pages should be stapled or folded together so they will not be misplaced.  At least once a week, homework will be graded as a quiz.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!

·         Make-up work will be accepted for full credit for excused absences.

·         In the case of an unexcused absence, homework will be accepted for 50% credit.  If an assignment is missed because of an in-school suspension, it will be accepted for 25% credit.  If it is missed because of an out-of-school suspension, it will be accepted for 10% credit.

·         Some class activities will require your participation.  These activities will be worth 5 points and recorded with the same weight as a homework assignment.

A cumulative semester exam will be given both semesters.

Semester grades will be determined by the following:  .45 (1st nine week + 2nd nine week) + .1 (final).

Course grades will be assigned according to the diocesan grading scale as found in your agenda book.

Classroom Procedures

Be Prompt.  Attendance will be taken at the bell.  If you are not in your seat when the bell rings, you will be issued a demerit.

Be Prepared:  Everyday you will need your book, a pencil, pen, and notebook paper.  Failure to not be prepared will result in a demerit.

Be Respectful.  You should be quiet and respectful while I am teaching or answering questions of others.  You may not leave your desk during instruction time.  If you have a question or would like to answer a question, you must raise your hand and wait to be called upon.  Please remember that you are in a shared learning environment and your actions affect those around you.  I will dismiss you at the end of class after all trash has been thrown away and desks returned to their original positions.

Cheating.  Cheating is defined as giving or receiving unauthorized aid on assignments, quizzes, or tests.  If you are caught participating in such behavior, you will receive a ZERO on that particular item.  YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO COMMUNICATE IN ANY FORM WITH OTHERS DURING A QUIZ OR TEST!!!

Rules and Regulations.  The rules and regulations as outlined in the agenda book will be enforced.

Passes.  You will be allowed three passes each nine-week period.  These can only be used during non-instructional time.  You must have your agenda book with you in order to receive a pass.

Absences.  If you are absent, you are responsible for missed notes and assignments.  Upon your return, you must turn in all work that was due on the day of your absence.  You will have three days to turn in all work you missed while you were gone.  If you are absent the day of a quiz or test, you will have to schedule a time to take the quiz/test before or after school.  The make-up must be completed within one week of your return or you will receive a zero.  If you are absent the day before a quiz or test, you will be required to take the quiz/test on the assigned day.

Calculators.  Calculators will not be used in this class until further notice.

Extra Credit.  Students who have no late work will receive 5 extra credit homework points at the end of each nine weeks.

 Additional Help

I will be available to help students in the afternoons until 4pm , or by appointment.  My room is 401.  Members of the National Honor Society are also available to tutor students.  There is no charge.  If you are interested, let me know and I will set up an appointment with you and a member of NHS.
