HTML – JAVASCRIPT – Dreamweaver CS3

Text:  Cengage--Shelly Cashman Series ··Dreamweaver CS3.  .  The class fee covers this item and other materials.

Course Purpose: To help students develop skills and knowledge of web site design and development, and to increase the students’ ability to use higher order cognitive skills such as problem solving, synthesis, analysis, and creative thinking.  This course will assist students in finding success in school and in the professional work force.

Attendance: All students are to be in class, seated and ready for work when the bell rings.  Failure to do so is considered being tardy and will result in one demerit (refer to demerit policy in student handbook).  When students are absent, it is their responsibility to check with the teacher and make arrangements to complete the work that was missed.

Assignments:  Most assignments are due during class unless otherwise stated.  If an assignment is not finished in the allotted time, the student has until the following school day to hand it in or permission from the instructor for an extension; otherwise a zero will be recorded.  ASSIGNMENTS MAY NOT BE COMPLETED DURING INSTRUCTION TIME! I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY UNEXCUSED LATE ASSIGNMENTS!!

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out if you need to make up an assignment!  Students will have sufficient time to complete assignments when their absence is excused. Students must have their assignments completed before they leave on pre-arranged absences.  Assignments missed because of out-of-school or in-school suspension, or unexcused absence will result in 50% credit given on the assignment(s), if it is turned in the next class meeting after you return to school, otherwise it will be counted as a zero.  If you are gone on the day of a test or the day an assignment is due, you will be expected to make up the test or hand in the assignment the first school day you are back (schedule the test with me).

Creative Duplication: Students are expected to do their own work.  At times, students will work with each other when applicable but are still expected to create their own work. Students caught copying or creatively duplicating will receive a zero on the assignment or test and your parents will be notified.  On the second violation, a conference with your parents will be required to continue this class.  Anyone caught file copying may lose computer privileges, which may result in a failing grade for the assignment and possibly for the course.

Grading:  Grades are evaluated on a point system for each assignment.  Lab points are earned based on daily attendance, participation and behavior.  Assignments and quizzes will be approximately the same amount of points and test will be assigned more points.  A MAJOR PROJECT IS ASSIGNED FOR EACH SEGMENT WE COVER!  These projects will be due at the END of each SEGMENT on a specific date determined by the teacher.  The semester exam will count as 10% of your grade.  Failure to follow rules or not working during class on assignments will result in a loss of lab points.

The following grading scale will be used:

100 – 99   A+                   92 – 91   B+                    84 – 83   C+                  75 – 74   D+             69 and below   F

98 – 95     A                      90 – 87   B                      82 – 78   C                    73 – 72   D

94 – 93     A-                     86 – 85   B-                     77 – 76   C-                   71 – 70   D-

BCCHS WEB SITE DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

DISCUSSION AND APPLICATION OF RELATED WEB TOPICS AND PROGRAMS

Course Purpose: To allow the student to practice the skills and knowledge of web design and development in a professional business environment.  Students will develop skills in organization, communication, cooperative teamwork, problem solving, creativity, goal setting, time management and task completion.  These skills will help students compete and be successful in an increasingly demanding work force.

Organization: Students will elect a student web master whose responsibilities include the maintenance of the BCCHS home page and overall supervision of the web site.  Two assistants will also be elected to help out with responsibilities.  All others will be assigned areas of responsibilities as needed.  The student web master and assistants will be selected at the beginning of the semester.  The instructor reserves the right to remove and replace the web master and/or the assistants if responsibilities are not being diligently executed.

Attendance: All students are to be in class, seated and ready for work when the bell rings.  Failure to do so is considered being tardy and will result in one demerit and loss of daily lab points (refer to demerit policy in student handbook).  When students are absent, it is their responsibility to check with the teacher and make arrangements to complete the work that was missed.  This class requires dedicated attendance much like the workforce in today’s society if we are to produce and effectively maintain a professional Web site.

Assignments: Students will be assigned certain areas of responsibilities. Grades will be determined by the instructor on how well responsibilities are carried out and completed.  Some assignments may require work outside of class time.  Evaluation by the instructor will occur every week based on a scoring rubric of 15 points.  Each student fills out a weekly production sheet explaining the tasks and duties performed.  Students will be evaluated on teamwork, task completion, time management, attitude, creativity, industriousness, attendance, cooperativeness, and group discussion and participation.

Grading:  Grades are evaluated on a weekly point system (3 points daily) for each area of responsibility plus five lab points are earned daily based on attendance, participation and behavior.   Failure to follow rules, class procedures, and requirements will result in a loss of daily lab points.  The main purpose of this class is to maintain and update the BCCHS web page in a professional business environment, by utilizing the skills you learned.

Behavior: Web Applications is an upper-level computer production class and I expect you to behave accordingly. This course is by teacher approval.  I want you to enjoy what you are doing and to be creative, but, because we design and maintain the BCCHS web site which is in full view of the general public, this course demands a serious student who will ply his/her duties and responsibilities with due diligence to produce the best product.  If a student demonstrates a refusal to follow the rules of this class or discharges their duties with irresponsibility, a conference with the parents will be setup to correct the situation, or the student will be withdrawn from the class.

No one is allowed to work in a computer lab unless a teacher is present.  In most cases, I or another teacher will be in a computer lab from 7:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. or from 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., or by appointment if a student needs additional help or needs to make up work.  The labs are closed after school on Friday.

NO EATING OR DRINKING WILL BE ALLOWED IN THIS CLASSROOM!!!  DON’T EVEN ASK!!   VIOLATION OF THIS RULE OR ANY RULES STATED IN THIS SYLLABUS WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF DAILY LAB POINTS AND/OR IMMEDIATE DISCIPLINARY ACTION SUCH AS THE ISSUENCE OF DEMERITS OR DETENTION.

NO GAMES, E: MAIL OR INSTANT MESSAGING.  NO DOWNLOADING FROM THE INTERNET WILL BE ALLOWED UNLESS IT IS CLASS RELATED AND OR YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION.  CLASS TIME IS FOR STUDY, RESEARCH, PROJECTS, AND ASSIGNMENTS!   STUDENTS MUST ASK PERMISSION!!!  VISITING BLOCKED SITES BY WAY OF A PROXY IS AGAINST SCHOOL POLICY AND YOU WILL LOSE COMPUTER PRIVILEDGES, FACE DETENTION, OR SUSPENSION.
