Course
Description:
English II provides the students reading and writing experiences, allowing them
improve their knowledge and understanding of literature. This course enables
students to apply their study of literary terminology and criticism to various
texts of poetry, fiction, and drama. This course enables students to communicate
effectively through a variety of writing activities, further developing their
grammar and vocabulary skills.
Course
Objectives:
1.
To
understand and to appreciate the genres and the differentia of poetry, fiction,
non-fiction, and drama.
2.
To
utilize literary concepts in developing, understanding, and appreciation of
literature through discussion and compositions.
3.
To
construct through reading, reflective thinking, discussion, and composition the
great themes and universal truths embodied in literature.
4.
To
write essays that use varied sentence structure, clear thesis statements,
effective paragraphs, and correct punctuation.
Materials:
Text, pens,
pencils, 3-ring notebook, and one subject spiral
notebook for journal entries.

addition to these readings the student will read poetry, drama, short stories

Journal:
You will be given a topic everyday for journal entries. You are expected to be
honest, but do not write what you do not want me to see.

Notebook:
All notes, vocabulary and assignments are to kept in this notebook and to be
brought to class everyday.

Homework
Homework/Assignments:
Homework
assignments will be completed before the beginning of class or they will be
counted late. All other homework assignments and projects will be turned in on
their due date, if not before.
Late
Homework:
You may turn in late assignments for half credit for up to three days, after
which you will not receive credit. You have three school days to make up
homework missed because of an absence. Formal tests are announced ahead of time;
therefore, tests and quizzes will be made up the day you return to school
–plan for this. Any formal papers
will be considered late if not turned in at the beginning of class: Later that
day, 5 pts off; Each day after, 1 letter grade. Day 5 - no credit.

grading scale at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School:
100%
- 93% - A
92%-85% - B
84%-
76% - C
75% - 70% - D Below
70% - F
Point
System: Each
nine weeks is worth 45%; final worth 10%.
Leaving
the Classroom:
The student will receive 10 extra credit points at the beginning of each
quarter. Each time they leave the room for personal reasons (bathroom, locker,
etc.) 5 of these points will be deducted. After these 10 points, the student
will receive a demerit for each time he/she leaves the room.
Classroom
Policies
1.
Be SEATED IN YOUR DESK when the bell rings and writing in your journal.
2.
All rules for
conduct that are listed in the student handbook will be enforced.
3.
Bring English
notebook, paper, pen, pencil and appropriate book to class EVERYDAY.
4.
No candy, food,
or drinks allowed in the classroom.
5.
Use appropriate
and positive language—be respectful!
6.
Do not talk
while I am talking.
All rules and regulations are
subject to change at my discretion.
Cheating:
If you are
caught cheating or plagiarizing, you will receive a zero on that assignment.
