Senior Service Project Guidelines

Fr. C. Jarrod Lies

Pope John Paul II:

“What makes a volunteer dedicate his/her life to others?  First of all the innate movement of the heart that inspires every human being to help his fellow man.  It is a law of existence.  A volunteer experiences a joy that goes far beyond what he has done when he succeeds in giving himself freely to others.  Wherever situations of hardship and suffering appear, manifest the hidden resources of dedication, goodness and heroism which dwell in the heart of the human person.

Continue your journey with courage; do not let difficulties stop you.  May Christ, the Good Samaritan, be the sublime model to be imitated by every volunteer  Imitate Mary who, by going “in haste” to assister her cousin Elizabeth, became a messenger of joy and salvation.  May she teach you her humble and concrete charity and obtain from the Lord the grace for you to recognize him in the poor and suffering.

Dear brothers and Sisters who make up this “army” of peace spread over the face of the earth, you are a sign of hope for our times.  With these wishes, I impart a special Apostolic Blessing to you, and all whom you meet every day in the course of your service to the human person.”

1. Philosophy:  The project is concentrated on teaching the student to demonstrate his/her charity for others within the community.  The contact they make with these groups formulates a feeling for the community in which they soon will be the voters and participants of programs and benefits of the government.  Once they implement their choices the students should be more aware of problems and social necessities which they may one day be able to facilitate as leaders of programs.

2. Twenty Hours (Twenty-five for Honors): Twenty or twenty-five hours of community service are to be completed during the semester the student is enrolled in Christian Vocation class.

3. Outside school hours:  Hours must be complete outside school hours.

4. Freestanding hours:  The hours cannot be in corroboration with any other organization that the student is a member of such as the Mission Club, Liturgy Club etc.

5. Non-profit group:  The hours must be completed for a non-profit organization such as Mennonite Housing Rehabilitation, the Leukemia Society, tutoring in another school with an at-risk child, the Wichita Children’s home, Meals on Wheels, any nonprofit hospital such a Via Christi etc.  Because the nature of this project is service to the wider community the service project cannot be connected to a Catholic Parish.  Such service properly falls under stewardship and should already be a regular part of the student’s faith life.  Mrs. Brenner is available to answer any questions of eligibility.

6. Non-family Member Supervision: Because the service hours are intended to teach the student how to be comfortable in service to the wider community a close relative or a parent cannot supervise the hours.  Neither can a parent or close relative direct the organization chosen.

7. Rewards:  Volunteering can be interesting, educational and beneficial to the body and soul, and can be a very enjoyable experience.  Most of all it helps us to grow in holiness after the image of Jesus Christ who came to serve and not to be served.

8. Caution:   Procrastination leads to unnecessary delay in completing a project that can easily be accomplished in ten weeks with a minimum of two hours each week.  Most organizations feel that twenty to  twenty-five hours is the absolute minimum they will accept as they must train and process forms for volunteers.

9. Time Record:  It is important for the student to keep a written record of their time.  A time sheet has been provided to the student.

10. Reflection Paper:  The student will be required to submit a typed one to two page reflection paper on their service hours.  It is to be a personal reaction to the service project.  It must include where the student went, what activity the chose, what they personally learned from the experience and affidavits from the person or agency for which you worked.  If you have any paper, time cards or information please attach these papers along with your time sheet if it applies.

Contact:  Mrs. Brenner will be available for any further questions.
