Course Syllabus

Instructor:  Tracey Fox

Course Text: Platinum Series, Edition 10, Interactive Reader, Language Network workbook, as well as various required novels

Hours of Availability:  7:30-7:55 a.m. and 3:15-3:40 p.m. and ANYTIME by request

 Course Description:  Students in English II will master the thesis-controlled; five paragraphed essay, and will be introduced to critical thinking through analogies.  They will continue higher-level literary analysis through written and oral methods and additional exposure to world literature.

Course Objectives:  The student will;

  1. Interpret and analyze appropriate reading material demonstrating a mastery of main idea and an understanding of analogies.
  2. Continue to practice vocabulary and grammar exercises to demonstrate knowledge of standard usage of the English language.
  3. Reinforce writing skills through additional exposure to a variety of writing in an attempt to help the student develop fluent writing skills.

Materials:  Text, pens, pencils, and a notebook (either 3-ring or spiral) are required for class.

Grading:

The grading scale at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School:

100%-93% -A                     
92% - 85% -B                       
84% - 76% -C                                                                       
75% - 70% -D          
            
Below 70% - F

Grades will be earned upon the completion of the following assignments:

Compositions:  Several five-paragraph essays, a short story, two major projects, poems, and reports some of which will be given orally will be required.

Quizzes:  Several quizzes will be given to test for vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension

Tests:  will be given at the conclusion of each unit, depending on the topic, test may be objective or essay.  Fall semester test will be comprehensive, and spring will be all-inclusive

Notebook:  All notes, vocabulary words, journal entries and miscellaneous writing assignments are to be kept in a 3 ring binder notebook solely designated for the purpose of English

Participation Points:  Each student, at the start of each 9-week period, will be given 50 participation points.  5 points will be deducted each time a student must use class time due to a failure to be in their assigned seat when the bell rings ; to bring proper book or supplies, or to use the restroom.   (except in cases of emergencies)

Absences:

-Work assigned prior to an excused absence is due on the date of the student’s return or on the due date.

 -All quizzes and test missed must be made up by appointment within three school days.

-Assignments missed because of suspension (whether in school or out of school) will be given NO credit.

-Tests missed because of in-school or out-of-school suspension will NOT be made up.

-Assignments tests missed because of unexcused or non-excused absences will be given zeroes. 

-Assignments missed because of school activities (athletics, play performances, concerts, etc.) must be made up prior to the absence

Cheating:  Cheating is a serious issue and will not be tolerated.  Zeros will be given to any assignment, paper, or test, where cheating is observed, and the student will be referred to the administration.

To Kill A Mockingbird- book will be provided

A Separate Peace- in literature book

Othello- (honors only) book will be provided

The Count of Monte Cristo- student will need to bring

Antigone- in literature book

Inherit the Wind- book will be provided

Animal Farm- student will need to bring

Julius Caesar- in literature book

King Arthur Tales- book will be provided

1984-(honors only) – book will be provided

Classroom Policies: 

  1. Be SEATED IN YOUR DESK when the bell rings or 5 points is deducted.
  2. First day assignment is late, a letter grade will be dropped, a zero, if 2 or more days late 
  3. All rules for conduct that are listed in the student agenda will be enforced
  4. No candy, gum, food, or drinks allowed in the classroom
  5. All work is to be done on loose-leaf paper and in BLUE or BLACK ink to receive credit
  6. It is your responsibility to find out what the make-up assignment is
  7. Use common sense and common courtesy
  8. 2nd & 3rd hour students- Mass is a study hall, no visitors, no games, only silent studying.
