Instructor: Mr. Engel

E-mail:  engeldan@bcchs.org

Goal:  The students will have an opportunity for a better understanding of the roots of
Christianity and the way God worked with and through people in preparation for Christianity.

Topics          The infallibility of Scripture

                        Multiple source theories for Scripture

The emphasis of different books in the Old Testament (OT)

The foreshadowing of the New Testament in the OT

Symbolism and Theology expressed in Scripture

Explanation of contrary passages in scripture

What God reveals us about himself and ourselves through the OT

                        Any questions regarding the OT

Texts:  The New American Bible Fireside ed., Understanding the Scriptures.

Tests:  Students will be given short answer and essay tests periodically.  The tests will be based on information obtained from the textbooks, council documents, videos, lectures and class discussion.  If you miss a test you will be given the number of days missed plus one to take the test.  You will need to make arrangements with me to take that test before or after school.

Homework:  Homework will be given out periodically to facilitate thought and discernment on the teachings of the Church.  Late work is not worth any points but needs to be completed to qualify for extra credit.   If you miss a class or a test due to an illness you will be given the number of days missed plus one to receive credit for the assignment.

Extra Credit: Extra credit is only available for anyone who does all of his or her assigned work.  You will need approval from me before you do the extra credit for it to be applied to your grade.  All extra credit must be turned in 1 week before the end of the 9-week grading cycle.

Grading:  Grading will be based on the BC grading scale using a total points system.  A portion of the student’s grade will be based upon class participation.  I will also have pop notebook checks so students will need a separate notebook for this class to turn in overnight for a grade.  I will use the school wide grading scale: A+ 100-99, A 98-95, A- 94-93, B+ 92-91, B 90-87, B- 86-85, C+ 84-83, C 82-78, C- 78-76, D+ 75-74, D 73-72, D- 71-70, F 69-0.

Cheating:  Any student caught cheating will be given a zero on the assignment and a “cht” will be placed in the point’s section in the grade book.

Other:    One of the biggest complaints about Catholics is that they do not know, read or pray with Scripture.  This semester is your opportunity to really focus on reading scripture to learn more about the roots of Christianity and what those roots teach us about ourselves and God.

I am available in room 205 before and after school for anything.  (During tennis season I am only available before school.)

The instructor reserves the right to change the syllabus.
