The  word “science” comes from a Latin term “scire” which means “to know”.  I am looking forward

to assisting with your student’s pursuit of gaining knowledge . . .

The best way to receive a more immediate response is by e-mail. If calling the school, you need to leave a message at 722-2390 but understand my plan period is not until 7th hour.  Students needing additional assistance may come to my classroom either before or after school between 7:20 – 7:50AM or between 3:15 – 3:45PM.  Attendance of monthly faculty or department meetings may result in my not being available during these scheduled times.  Please let me know of your intention either by signing up or e-mailing me.

Required materials to be brought to class:

Ø      Textbook:  Textbook: Environmental Science, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, copyright 2000

Ø      Agenda Book:  Required every day

Ø      Writing Utensils:  #2 Pencil, Black or Blue Pens, and Red Pens

Ø      Composition Book

Ø      Organization system of student's choice for returned homework and handouts: You will be responsible for maintaining any returned papers for review in preparation of any project, quiz, or test.

o       This can be either a 3-pronged pocket folder exclusively for physical science, 3 ring binder with pocket dividers, or some type of trapper keeper with pockets.

o       I will be happy to provide assistance, if needed.

Although points at the beginning of the semester are worth as much as points at the end, grades are broken into 3 weighted categories to equal 100%:

50% tests/quizzes          40% homework, lab work, projects      10% class participation

Remember that grading scales with weighted categories will compute differently than a total point grading scale.   Students will receive and review the explanation with a log sheet for tracking their progress.

Classroom Rules:

1.      Be respectful of other students, teachers & property.

ü      Come with a positive attitude.

ü      Wait to speak until recognized; Listen without interrupting.

ü      Show respect for people and their opinions, even though you may not agree.

ü      Extend this courtesy to demonstrations or lab materials that are set up for other classes.

ü      Do not write or mark on the desks/tables, otherwise you will have cleanup detention after school.

ü      No food, beverage or gum as on some days, they double as desks and lab area.  Keep your areas clean in consideration of the next person sitting in your area.

2.      Be punctual and prepared to participate.

ü      Bring completed homework and required material to be turned in upon arrival to the classroom, unless directed otherwise.

ü      Pull materials needed from backpacks before placing the backpacks/purses along the walls of the classroom

ü      Sharpen pencils before class.

o       Having to get up during the class period to sharpen you pencil or throw away trash is distracting.

ü      An unexcused tardy or not being in your assigned seat before the bell rings will result in the receipt of a demerit.

o       Ask for the previous hour's classroom teacher signature in your agenda if you were finishing a test or helping to "clean-up" resulting in your being delayed.

o       If you have locker problems, let the office know and request a signature in your agenda.  You will receive a demerit if this is not brought with you.

3.      Be focused on the task at hand.

4.      Follow all handbook rules.

ü      Cell phones are not allowed during school hours.  Any phones confiscated will be turned in to the office.

Hall passes will be allowed on an emergency basis only.   They may be used on a basis of needing to make

a trip to the restroom, water fountain, locker or to make a phone call in the office in an effort to avoid

receiving a demerit for being tardy or coming unprepared.  Each student will be allowed a maximum of 5

hall passes per semester.  A student’s request to use the pass may be delayed until it is appropriate to miss

out on the activity in the class.  Each student must present his/her own hall pass given during the semester

for appropriate accountability.  2 points credit will be allotted for each unused hall pass at the end of the

semester.  Students must show them at the time of the final for credit during that semester.  If a student

does not bring the hall pass to the final, then the 2 points credit per unused pass will be forfeited.  Once the

hall pass is used up or misplaced, it may not be replaced.

Homework:  Homework is due on the assigned date, typically the next class period, unless noted otherwise.

Students will always have homework, in the form of reviewing the text, vocabulary and notes taken in class

and can be prepared for potential quizzes.

Headings on Papers in upper right corner of paper, if not in the composition book:

Assignment title (such as “Questions, pg. 25”)

Date

Late Work:  Late work is NOT accepted!!  If an assigned due date is given at the time of an

assignment, then homework is due at the beginning of the hour.  NO EXCEPTIONS. This includes the

computer/printer conflicts that may happen on the home front.  Please get your work in on time!!  Late work

is NOT accepted!!  Homework is due at the beginning of the hour.  NO EXCEPTIONS. Please get your work in

on time!!

*Assignments that require the use of Internet Research or Word Processor/Presentation Software/Printer

Usage will have had class time incorporating the use of school facilities.  If students use the time allowed in

class as intended and plan personal time accordingly for any extended work, there should be no conflict of

meeting timelines established in class, unless there has been an excused absence that warrants extensions

of timelines and communication of this need with me has been established.  Work with previously

established timelines will be due upon the return of the student.

Make-Up Work:  Only if an absence is excused will make-up work be accepted for full credit.

ü      Make-up work should be completed within two days of returning to class.

ü      In accordance with the student handbook, if an absence is anticipated, the student needs to notify the office and the teacher.  It is the student's responsibility to get any handouts and make-up assignments.

ü      If notes were taken, it is the student's responsibility to check with a classmate to complete their notes.  Exchange phone numbers or e-mail addresses with a “study buddy”.

ü      If an assignment was due or a test was scheduled on the day of the absence, the assignment will be due upon your return to school.

ü      Make-up of missed labs for excused absences are to be made up either by appointment or between 3:15 - 4:30 PM by the Thursday afternoon (within a week) following the excused absence(s).

Quizzes:  won't always be announced and the topic will usually be on the most recent information reviewed. It is to your advantage to review vocabulary/notes before class.  Quizzes will always address either vocabulary or material introduced in class.

Tests: will be announced in advance. Tests will be reviewed in class but kept by Mrs. Crownover.  Students wishing to review the test are welcome to come in for additional review and clarification of understanding.

Finals:  The final will address the cumulative material learned throughout the semester and be 10% of your semester grade.

Extra Credit:  This will happen about as frequently as Halley Comet's appearance to Earth.  I also do not create extra credit projects for individual student. Good Rule of Thumb to follow - Complete and turn in all the work assigned and extra credit won't be needed.

Cheating:  A zero will be given and a discipline referral will be made.  Save yourself the grief of a bad reputation and do your own work!

ISS or OSS:  Knowledge of work conducted in class will still be needed for success in the chapter tests and subsequent Semester Final.  Students are still accountable for the work addressed during this absence. Pursuant to the Student Handbook (Pg. 21) Students in ISS will be allowed to turn in completed work for 50% credit after the work has been graded.  Students asked to leave my classroom due to uncooperative choices or for serving an OSS will not be allowed to make up the work missed during the time out of class. This includes homework, lab work, and tests.

Parent/Guardian(s):

I am looking forward to working with your student as we work together in exploring the field of Ecology. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions!  You can reach me through e-mail at crownoverjan@bcchs or the office at 722-2390.  Leave your name and number and I will call you back as soon as I can.  My planning period is not until 7th hour. You are welcome to share your email address at this time, if you would prefer that I try to contact you in this manner.    Please detach the bottom portion of this page with your signature that will verify that you have received and reviewed this syllabus with your student. Participation points will be earned with this signature being returned.  Thank-you!
