Introduction to Philosophy

Class Materials:  Bring a writing utensil, notebook paper, and the textbook to class everyday.

Grading Procedures:  Grades are determined by percentage of total points within each quarter.  Points will be earned during class discussion when announced by the teacher.  Class participation points can be earned or lost at any time.  Extra credit points may also be earned by an exemplary attitude and work ethic in class.

Late Work:  Assignments are due at the beginning of class.  Homework may be turned in before the end of the day following the due date for half credit.

Reading Papers:  EVERY HOMEWORK reading assignment will entail the assumed assignment of a NO LONGER than 1 page response to the assignment including the following criteria:

-          2  questions you really have about the reading or the topic

-          A general response – How does this relate to reality?  What other themes relate to this topic?

-          Your opinion on the reading – did the philosopher get it right or wrong?

-          Reasons to back up your opinions

Sanity Clause! – We will be doing a lot of reading in this class, and life can be busy.  Therefore, you may not submit up to 4 of the reading papers without penalty.  I suggest saving these for the end of the semester.

Quality:  Written work should be clear, concise, and grammatically correct!!!  Students will be graded on how well the question is answered or the objectives are met; extra “filler” words or useless phrases and clichés are not encouraged.

Respect/Rules:

--The class will be seated by the time the bell rings.  You will then immediately stand for prayer.

-All handbook rules apply.  Demerits will accompany any disrespectful behavior.

-Men will allow the ladies to exit the room before them.

-You will not be excused from class to go to the bathroom or fill your water bottle.  If we are finished with class lecture/discussion, you may ask permission to go during the last 5 minutes of the class period.

-Students will have to listen – I refuse to repeat myself.  Instructions will be stated only once.

-If you receive a demerit but do not have your demerit card on you – you will receive another demerit for lack of card.

But we are all philosophers, unless we are animals.  Men live not just in the present but also in the future. We live by hope. Our hearts are a beat ahead of our feet. Half of us is already in the future; we meet ourselves coming at us from up ahead.  Our lives are like an arc stretching out to us from the future into the present. Our hopes and ideals move our present lives.  Animals' lives are like an arc coming to them out of the past; they are determined by their past.  They are pushed; we are pulled. They are forced; we are free. They are only instinct, heredity, and environment; we are more;

we are persons.”
- Peter Kreeft,
Three Philosophies of Life
