Course Text: The British Tradition

Office Hours: Mornings 7:30-7:45

Afternoons: 3:15-3:40

Course Purpose:  English IV is a full year course, which serves as an introduction to British literature.  Students in English IV will write a variety of short compositions and also full-length reaction and analysis papers.  Furthermore, they will expand their knowledge and application of vocabulary and grammar skills.  Moreover, students will survey a chronological approach to British literature.

One autobiography or biography

One mystery novel

Five short stories (not in text)

Course Materials:  Students will need the text and/or novel or play, vocabulary book, agenda book, pen, pencil and a notebook.

 

Compositions:  A number of composition papers will be due each semester.  Most of these papers need to be typed and when necessary use the MLA form.

 

Quizzes:  10+ quizzes will be given each nine weeks. 

 

Tests:  Objective, quotation, and/or essay tests will be given on each unit.

 

Creative Projects:  These projects will be discussed in class. 

 

Vocabulary:  Bi-Weekly assignments. 

 

Semester Tests:  The semester test will be comprehensive. 

 

Grading Information:  The grading scale published in the agenda book will be applied.   Semester grades will be determined by the following formula:  45% quarter grade + 45% quarter grade+ 10% semester final.  

 

Extra Credit:  Extra credit is never given on an individual basis; all extra credit is offered to the entire class. 

 

Late Papers:  One letter grade deduction per day.  After four days, the grade is 0. 

 

Absences:  Work missed because of class absence will be treated as follows:

1.      Work assigned prior to an excused absence is due on the date the student returns or on the date due. 

2.      All quizzes and tests missed during an absence must be made-up the following morning. 

3.      Assignments missed because of an unexcused or non-excused absence will receive a score that reflects 50% of the correct answers. 

4.      Assignments, tests and quizzes missed because of suspension must be made-up on the day of return in order to receive any credit.  These assignments, tests and quizzes will receive a score that reflects 50% of the correct answers. 

5.      Assignments missed because of school activities need to be made-up prior to the absence unless arrangements are made ahead of time.  Full credit will be received. 

 

Cheating:  Cheating or attempts to cheat or attempting to gain any unfair advantage in grades will be considered a serious infraction.  Punishment will range from a 10% penalty to the student receiving a “0”.

 

 Be prepared when you come to class and be on time.  You are asked to be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.

Course Purpose:  AP English is a full year course, which serves as an introduction to classical literature.  Students in AP English will write full-length reaction and analysis papers based upon their knowledge and appreciation of the literature studied in the text and supplemental plays, short stories, and novels.  Furthermore, they will expand their knowledge and application of vocabulary.  Moreover, students will survey a chronological approach to British literature.
