Course Objective:  By the end of this semester, you will be better at these two skills than you are now:

1)        using problem solving skills during experiments and hypothetical situations

2)      explaining how the natural world works, focusing on matter and energy in the field of physics

Required Materials:

-Prentice Hall Physical Science textbook and workbook (the ones with the hang-glider)

-pencils or black/blue pens + red pens

-spiral notebook or binder section for notes

-loose leaf paper (for assignments)

-calculator

-other items may be asked of you during the year and you

will be expected to bring them

Procedures:

          a. Beginning of class:

-to avoid a tardy, be by your desk when the bell rings

-stand for prayer, then be seated

-assignments must be ready when asked for

-if you’re having locker issues or need to use the restroom, you can let me know a couple minutes before the bell rings and you won’t be counted late (if it becomes a habit, you will lose this privilege)

          b. During class:

                   - materials must be brought each day; if they are forgotten, you will have to one of two punishments:

                  1) draw a punishment from the Jar o’ Fun and perform it

(for example, pretending to be a wolf for two minutes)

                  2) take a demerit

-you are given 2 hall passes per semester for bathroom breaks

when class is underway (these don’t apply to emergencies)

-only water and gum are allowed (no food or other drinks)

-when the teacher (or a recognized student) is talking, everyone else must respect that person and not be talking while they are.

-cell phones must be kept silent and out of sight

-Nobody in this classroom has the right to keep the

teacher from teaching or a student from learning.

          c. End of class:

-any messes must be picked up/cleaned up before anyone can leave

-remain around your seats until you are dismissed by the teacher

Homework:

-all assignments must have your name, date, hour, and class in the top right hand corner (partial credit for missing info

-papers with spiral edges will be returned to you for de-edgitization

-your homework is late if it is not ready when asked for

-late assignments are 50% off and must be turned in to me before I leave school on the due date (if not turned in that day, then no credit is given)

-the use of pen or computer is required for lab reports

-if you will miss class for any activity during the school day, you will need to get the assignment beforehand; your assignment will be due with everyone else’s

Final Exam and Rankings:

-at the end of the semester, you will take a comprehensive final using questions from all previous tests; it will be worth 10% of the semester grade

-two students will have their semester grades locked:

                   1. The King or Queen: the student who, more so than others,  has participated, been diligent, and respectful throughout the semester

                   2. The Scholar: the student who has the highest overall grade percentage for the two quarters

Grades:

Nine weeks Grade =        33% of Homework grade

                                                                             +

                                                    10% of Lab grade

                                                                             +

                                                   42% of Test grade

                                                                             +

                                                    15% of Project grade

                                                100% possible each 9 weeks

-The grading scale, and all other unstated rules and procedures, match the description given in the Bishop Carroll Agenda Book.  Accommodations for special needs students will be met if reasonable and fair.
