Class Policy

Mrs. Peggy Goreham

Attendance:

TARDIES:  Tardies should not occur on a regular basis; however if the student is late, the tardy will be recorded and one demerit given.

ABSENCES:  First of all, a student who is not in class is absent.  An absence will be recorded and lab points will not be earned, unless make-up is completed.  In case of a school related absence, the make-up should be done in advance of the activity.

Paper Assignments:

PAPER ASSIGNMENTS:  In case of absence, paper assignments must be made up within three days upon the student's return.  This includes tests, quizzes, reports and Reaction Papers.

Lab Grade:

LAB POINTS:  Lab points are earned by responsible participation, which is defined in the following way.  Each studio area has prescribed work habits and students are expected to work in those limits.  Students should maintain respect for each other and the facility.  Proper classroom behavior insures good participation.  Students must initial the LAB BOOK by the end of the period in order to begin the process of earning points (the beginning of class preparation).  Two points may be earned daily.  Absence will result in zero points as stated above.

MAKE-UP:  Lost lab points due to any reason (excluding school suspension and unexcused tardy/absence) may be made up by making arrangements with Mrs. Goreham.  This may vary according to the class and would require actual time spent working in the classroom on a project or work for the Art Department.  It is the responsibility of the student to request make-up assignments upon returning to class.  If you know you will be gone, be sure to follow school policy requesting an absence, and then do the work ahead.  In case of school suspension, any credit given the day or days missed will be done for half credit.  School suspension make-up must be done within three days upon the student's return.  Unexcused tardy/absence will result in a zero for whatever is missed, without make-up.

LAB MAKE-UP DEADLINE:  The lab make-up deadline is built into the make-up process in order to encourage students to do their best quality work in art.  This deadline is usually set toward the end of the grading period and is used for labs only!

Project Grade:

ALL PROJECTS WILL HAVE HARD DEADLINES; meaning, projects will be due when requested or they will be “NHI”=Not Handed In=zero.  Coming in to catch up or taking the project home for additional time is expected, if necessary.

PROJECT DEADLINE EXTENSION (PDX): is provided to the student that may need extra time to complete a project due to some mishap.  Application may be made by filling out a PDX form and then must approved by Mrs. Goreham.  The conditions of the PDX will be stated and followed in order to complete the project in the prescribed time.  ONLY ONE PDX WILL BE GIVEN DURING A GRADING PERIOD (9 wks.)

DISHONEST AND INAPPROPRIATE WORK

Dishonest work includes cheating defined as giving assistance to, or using someone else's ideas, talent, or knowledge.  Anyone involved in such activity will receive zero credit on the assignment involved and may result in additional correction as necessary.  Some forms of cheating may involve copyright laws and this then becomes a serious matter.

Inappropriate work is defined as unacceptable in the Church, community or classroom and may, at times involve legal issues.  Inappropriate work will receive zero credit and opportunity may or may not be given by Mrs. Goreham to do the assignment again; additional correction may result as necessary.  The school chaplain, counselor and the student's parents will be notified as a result of any violation.

GRADING CRITERIA:  All assignments will receive a designated number of points and will be averaged by the number of points possible.  Percentage/grade for the grading period will use the standard scale at BCCHS (note in Student Agenda).  Projects will be graded along the following criteria and must be accompanied by a Project Grade Slip when due:

CRAFTSMANSHIP:  Mastery of a technique and skill in construction as well as the over-all presentation of the project.

FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS:  Working within the prescribed guideline of the given             assignment; without change, unless permitted by Mrs. Goreham

DESIGN/COMPOSITION:  The idea or concept that is presented in the project and the eye movement (visual harmony) that unifies objects within a project.

ORIGINALITY: One's creativity or original idea.  Note Dishonest and Inappropriate             section above.

Class Safety Precautions

Mrs. Peggy Goreham
2007-08

THERE WILL BE NO BOOK BAGS, JACKETS, PURSES, FOOD, GUM, CANDY OR

WATER CONTAINERS IN THE ART ROOM!

Book Bags and jackets need to be secured in your locker.  It is a safety issue because of tripping and security issues.  Students are mobile, and there is no room for them.

Purses should be secured in your locker so money and personal items are not stolen.

Food (gum/candy) is a health hazard around art materials and should never be eaten while working in art environments.

Water may be accessed with a hall pass to either end of 500 hallway.

CLOTHING

*Clothing will not be an excuse for not working in the art media (clay, paint, charcoal, etc.).  Aprons or smocks (old shirts) may be worn to protect your clothing.  Some will be provided; however you may want to bring your own.

*Keep apron strings tied and loose clothing tucked up, so it can not get caught in some of our equipment.

SHOES

*High heeled shoes and sandals will not be allowed on the throwing wheels (Ceramics).  Whatever your choice of shoe, you are expected to keep them on during class.

*Many hazardous materials, such as dust, glaze shards and steel wool wind up on the floor and can damage bare (sock covered) feet.

*Be watchful for water spills, because when combined with clay dust on the floor, the floor becomes very slick.  Mop up any water you find to help keep the area safe for everyone.  *Crepe-soled or tennis shoes are best and you may want to bring them to class to wear.  Storage for shoes will not be provided.

JEWELRY AND HAIR  (and Boy's Neckties)

*Jewelry should not be worn in the work area, as art materials can be damaging and if jewelry is left on the table, it is sometimes stolen or lost in clean-up.

*Long necklaces and large bracelets will be banned from class, as they are extremely hazardous around some of our equipment.

*For the same reason, extremely long hair and neckties must be tied back or tucked into your shirt, as they may get caught in throwing wheels, grinder, fan and the pugmill.

PUG MILL

The pug mill is a machine use in Ceramics and is for mixing clay bodies.

This machine can cause severe damage if improperly used.

Be sure you have proper instruction from Mrs. Goreham on its use, BEFORE you operate it.

The best approach to art class is that if you have not been instructed on how to use something–don’t touch it!  It might harm you or your buddy!

Violations of these rules will result in a loss of lab points!
